  • Yes

  • I just got an email this morning from "[email protected]"

They said my account will be deactivated since I have not used or own any active services in a long time.

I feel like the email is a scam, "buy something or go bye bye."

As long as email is authenticated by SPF+DKIM, I would somewhat trust it. There is very small probability of their servers or DNS being hacked.

  • i mean, sounds like that could be real, but email spoofing is a thing

It might be related to european gdpr obligations. You can't keep data or accounts about inactive customers.

They probably need to deactivate it under EU privacy rules; if you aren't using their services you're not a customer, and they don't have any legal excuse to hold your details.

If you think you will use Hetzner in the future then just spin up a server for 0,1$ to keep your account active.

GDPR law dictates that the provider must delete your data when it is no longer needed. Therefore, it is common for providers in the EU to delete inactive accounts.
