Made my first attempt at full sync mirroring of all WordPress plugin zip files, checksum files and JSON metadata https://github.com/centminmod/wordpress-plugin-mirror-poc :D Still needs work but it's a start :)

Starting operating costs = US5.35/month which increases as new plugins are released and cached/stored.

Now he's intercepting emails from Blind and telling employees they can ask him for the login codes. Holy fuck. Dude is straight up giving villain vibes at every opportunity.

To pull off being the hero he's gonna have to tell a wild story like:

"The investors turned out to be CIA and they're threatening a hostile takeover if I don't code in a backdoor that no one will recognize (because it allows exploitation of an unknown vulnerability in another package), so I decided to burn down the business instead."

    https://x.com/automattic/status/1842612123488473341?t=vFSSIj_JYzqH7Fib_WBB4w&s=19

Banned the plugin developer from updating it, found and started the path to publicly disclosing a vulnerability in it, and told them they have 30 days to update it.

Anyone still in Matt's corner is a piece of shit. There is no part of the WordPress ecosystem, nor any end user, he isn't willing to sacrifice in service of his personal vendetta.

On the plus side, something new and beautiful will grow from its ashes.

Matt is stepping up the pettiness weaponizing wordpress.org security CVE system now

He knows full well he has blocked WPEngine from updating their plugins on wordpress.org.

    Letterpull!

I'd be jazzed for a wordpress fork.

Getting rid of Gutenberg/Replacing it with something along the lines of Elementor (or even the old TinyMCE version) and adding native 2FA would be a damn good start.

Pretty sure this would be a quick/painless transition like MySQL->MariaDB and people who actually care about the community would likely want to hit the ground running with it.

Here's an archive link for folks that use VPN and don't have a Reddit account: https://archive.is/xv3LI

Went after ACF? Wow. That's a necessity-level plugin because Wordpress core blows. Then unnecessarily and irresponsibily bringing light to a security vulnerability?

Wordpress is absolutely nothing without the community. Matt and Automattic have entered the FA portion preceding the FO phase.

WordPress works great for me exactly the way it is now, so all forkers can go fork themselves (pun intended).

True tbh. In this case I'm fully capable of separating the art from the artist. I really don't give a fuck about rich idiots beefing over money.

WordPress works really well for me and fits my workflow perfectly (scalable dynamic websites with lots of content & collaboration, plus easy to host, optimize, and backup).

I'll still probably be using it 5 years from now, maybe 10, unless a better alternative comes along (Ghost is ok but not a true alternative, better for solo content creators/writers).

I think Matt underestimates just how much people love ACF... Far more than the shitty full-site builder he's responsible for. He really is determined to destroy Wordpress because of his ego, isn't he.

There are alternatives. The Metabox, Toolset, and a bunch of others.

Disclaimer: I'm not a fun of Matt's psycho attack on WP Engine I'm not a fun of either.

  • eva2000eva2000 Veteran

If true that Matt makes >$700 million/yr from wordpress.com https://medium.com/@shreyzone/wordpress-open-source-under-a-veiled-threat-dfa814cefc7e, then he really isn't bothered if regular WordPress users are impacted by this drama or if folks decide to fork WordPress. It does not change his financial position. And with 43% of the web using WordPress, loosing a couple percentage won't impact him at all - like the Automattic employee's who left over his actions, he would probably be fine with those free WordPress users leaving too.

Wow more news Matt has now poached WPEngine developer which takes WP GraphQL plugin with it to Automattic to become a canonical community plugin on WordPress.org

Just insane. Matt went nuclear on WPEngine and took the entire WordPress community with it!

He's effectively forcing folks to not affiliate with WPEngine - if you do business with them, buy their paid plugins, work for them , work with them to enrich WPEngine bank account, are a WPEngine customer etc he wants to damage WPEngine bottom line and force WordPress users to decide this if they want continued access to wordpress.org resources

His nuclear approach to WPEngine means taking the WordPress community with it!

What a childish and dictatorial attitude.
I hope that this whole situation leads Matt to get removed from the command.
He's out of control and ruining WP community.

Good riddance (from my perspective) but Matt might cry because she(?) is all about leadership. "Providing" it, offering it, demonstrating it, ...

She even wrote a blog post about "power of a good-hearted group of people" (link text) and actually titled "My Leadership Philosophy", in which she(?) tells her priorities.

    1 "being a woman in a male-dominated field"

2 "a person of color in a primarily white-dominated world"

3 "a general faith in the power of a good-hearted group of people".

In other words (IMO) a woke c_nt with a nice sounding line who politicizes anything she touches.

But don't despair, Matt certainly will find a "they" replacement that's even worse.

I happen to use WP on one site and am currently looking into WPEngine. Frankly, I'd like to use neither because I've learned to not like WP[whatever].

So, if anyone can suggest reasonable alternatives, preferably not in PHP I'm listening ...

  • So Matt deems using plugins to change WordPress functionality as being WPEngine is forking WordPress https://x.com/WordPress/status/1844477801652740244?t=n_vt4k3sKYHhEwJBDPA41g&s=19 LOL

Well, it seems that not all "open source" project have a benevolent dictator for a life. Some seem to have a malevolent and very greedy dictator openly in attack mode.

On the other hand, why disturb him in his amok run, driving users (and developers) away?

  • Matt is now going to steal WPEngine's developed Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) plugin and fork it https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/12/24268637/wordpress-org-matt-mullenweg-acf-fork-secure-custom-fields-wp-engine

Definitely going to rub WordPress developers the wrong way!
