What's your use of dedicated server?
in General
Current I'm having about 3-4 VPS idling, running proxmox, tailscale, vpn,... but I don't have many real use-case for this. I'm looking for some usecase from you to know what I can do with idled VPS, or more over a dedicated server (i'm looking for a cheap one to make fun).

Cronjob yabs 24/7
Considering it, maybe Running nws with cronjob 1 hour 1 minutes to get real network speed.
Do something useful with it.
Nextcloud:
Use it as a backup-storage for your pc/laptop?
Kasm
Coolify
Yunohost
wow.ark.nextcloud.seafile
I'm afraid that the host will see my data. I also have NAS at my local so next cloud is not very useful there. Moreover, do you use dedicated server for specific needs?
sharring file seems fun.
I'm using Coolify. Will check Yuno host
It’s a dedicated server. No one cares unless you’re doing tons of illegal shit and getting notices. It’s not free to check, a paid human spends time on if (owners count!).
Just encrypt it in transit and post your key in a random pastebin that no one knows is related to you and feel safe. The chances of someone running that key against your encrypted data is u likely. It’s more likely to be harvested and stored in a hidden data center to be hacked by AI using quantum computing in the future. At that point, who cares about your stuff? We may not even be alive.
+1 for nextcloud/owncloud
Could do PLEX or alike.
Monitoring APP like librenms ( it is the easiest you can deploy ), or if you want something challenging, centreon
PS:
IDLE like a PRO???

Seems great. I mean I don't really care about my stuff, it's all personal and legit, but it contains some sensitive data (ykr). So I'm afraid that something will happen, who knows...
Maybe a filesharing/seedbox/Jellyfin instance sound great, right ?
will check it out if I can make something fun with it.
But it's the first time I hear about centreon
Nextcloud, me and some of "my friends" always need file storage server for backing up "photos" and want it fully encrypted
turn them off, save the environment and heal the world
production sites with their db's and other related services
Other suggestions rather than idling:
Contribute to the TOR project. Host Linux mirrors. You can also donate computer processing power to science projects (BOINC).
Enable full-disk encryption then, using LUKS. Debian/Ubuntu have one-click remote SSH unlock configuration using
dropbear-initramfspackage.borgbackup was written for making encrypted backups on untrusted remote hosts - vorta desktop client is very good.
The first backup takes a long time then it's just sending a
diffof the changed data.I have a server running Linux Mint, which is accessible to the public via noVNC. I enjoy watching people enter just to try to cause damage to the system.
It is accessible at https://nov.projeto127.se.
I created it with the aim of learning how to protect an internal network against malicious users.
