Good
Is it just me or is the ST a bit lower than expected? I see a lot of GB6 cores in the lower-mid 3000s for 9950X.
Other factors could be at play:
1. Could depend on if they are testing it on the host node vs a VPS w/ vcores.
2. Could depend on what cpu clock rate the system is running at to.
Thanks,
Ryan
The score of GB6 should be around 3500, and the score of 7950X is also around 3000 under ideal conditions. This score feels a bit low.You can also optimize and check.
Could be a limitation of the server boards/temps on power parts. Most higher end Ryzen servers I've tested don't score near the "desktop users" bench results.
Have an idea of pricing as yet?
Maybe the cooling is not enough? I have Hybula and HostBrr 9950X servers. When the load was lower before, the GB6 scores were 3455 and 3300 respectively.
$7
9950X bench score is 5% more than 7950X but the price difference is significant. Why go for the 9950X?
See what motherboard they use with dmidecode. But I've had numerous issues with some Ryzen servers in the past that I'm almost certain were stemming from cooling on certain parts. My colo builds are... over-cooled now, and everything works flawless. I don't run the high end 7950X/9950X CPUs though.
But anyway cooling may not be related at all to their bench results. Just wanted to share my thoughts.
Regardless of the GB the OPLink servers are a great deal and always have been. Not many people in the US can compare with them especially if you're looking for someone who's been in business as long as they have.
Lower power consumption, lots of accelerated specific loads. It's not all about GB scores.
Latest gen always costs more.
As far as anyone here that would know a lot about the Ryzen setup would be @MrRadic !!!
GB6 score for Ryzen 9950x server
https://browser.geekbench.com/v6/cpu/7937606
Lower power consumption - will help DC and not the user
High Computation payloads - Architecture, media encoding and heavy databases will see some jumps
Rendering - Gaming people will be happy
WordPress and similar work loads, 7950X will make sense...?
DBs work more with IO to storage. I'm sure there is a point from CPU to Storage there is a fine line though.
Lower power costs mean lower costs for everyone, it takes time.
Overall, the 9950X is better in every way than the 7950X.
It kind of dosen't though, since 9950X is more expensive.
If it's cheaper in the future, that's the benefit of renting, we'll switch to it in the future then.
Why should I as a renter pay more now in the hopes of power savings being passed on later on?
Latest generation is always more expensive as the equipment needs to be paid off. Lower power consumption allows them to get cheaper as they age as operating costs are lower. This is forward looking savings.
Sounds like what I’m saying: The DC is benefiting from it now. I can benefit from it later. I’d rather get into the action when I benefit since I can choose when I purchase a 9950X server. It’s not the same for the DC.
The customer is always paying for (future) investments, irregardless of customer benefits
With how providers price current vs. last gen, current gen it seems to be especially true if you want current gen.
This is going to be a perfect world test with the entire CPU tested on the host node.
Name AMD Ryzen 9 9950X 16-Core Processor
Topology 1 Processor, 16 Cores, 32 Threads
Tests are vps plan tests. Here you can compare 9950x to 7950x in a VPS. You get a very small bump in SC performance, it shines in multicore. Power/heat are less, so 9950x for only little more in cost is a win in any datacenter.
There is a significant bump in single core performance on the 9950X CPU, especially in Linux. Our systems had approximately 3500 single core and 6100 multicore in GB6 on a 2 vCore 4 GB RAM KVM VPS - so not bare metal.
I'd suggest you check cooling/power limits/RAM speeds/BIOS if there isn't some intentional limitations put in place.
Just my 2 cents :-)
Was able to solve the issues with latest bios and a fresh install on the node. I did some testing with a 9900x and 9950x for some R&D. Maybe Flashing & wiping bios fully solved it.
I did get the latest ASROCK B650D4U-2L2T Bios direct from asrock version 20.04 which has AGESA 1.2.0.1, wish they had AGESA 1.2.0.2.
Sorry no LET sales/offer yet.
Thx
Ryan
I'm glad you were able to find and solve the problem. YABS looks good!
Always better to make sure things are stable first than load up a machine and have people complain.
(Granted people are going to complain just to complain....)
But I think we can all agree that we are indeed waiting for that sales/offer thread from you @oplink . My previous experience with you is very great.
They are on the website as of tonight. No sale till I get more inventory..
@oplink how many users share a vcpu on the 9950x systems?
