Interesting how OP is not commenting anymore.. Probably realised what "reason" was ?

I offered him some free consulting in private, because I kind of like the project and seemed like he needed it, given that Hetzner was being used to begin with. But after some simple questions related to the content hosted in the servers, he stopped responding. Maybe he is busy.

  • A lot of deadbrain takes in this thread. Hopefully OP gets and answer and finds a better provider.

@Hetzner_OL if you won't reply in this thread expect to lose around ~50 dedicated servers, since we will simply migrate to another provider, who is not blocking companies that work to bypass censorship. That's some Stasi shit here.

  • A respectfull company won't give a statement while you (or some dudes) are trying to act as if you pay 1$ then you own the entire company at your own fingers and they should do what you want to do, when you want to do.. That server it was not bought for idleing.

    What a childish threat.

Hetzner has responded, and this is their response:

To be clear, we asked "why" so that we can potentially resolve the issue. We'll never know why this happened apparently. Before this event, I had used Hetzner for years personally, so I figured I would continue that relationship.

Sorry if anyone has thought I've ignored them. I got busy with real life things. Will get back to everyone that has messaged today, and we do really appreciate the support we've gotten so far.

To note, we are a US non-profit and have no entity outside of the US. We aren't of Russian nationality either.

There are several users who associate the causes of any problems with Russia or Russians. Just ignore their posts.

Of course, we cannot provide you with exactly the same configurations and pricing as Hetzner (and 99.9% of other German hosting providers cannot either), but if you're looking for reliable hosting with a guarantee of reasonable responses to your questions, we would be happy to have you as a customer.

    Most likely Worldstream or NForce

That is the typical response they give after law enforcement did visit them, so some agency has now a copy of your data.

Evading censorship is against EU's principles, most especially Germany. It's the unwritten TOS that you violated. That's why the Telegram founder is in jail and you're losing your servers.

The Telegram founder isn't in jail though.

Not yet, but yeah usually rich people don't end often in the jail.

Exactly this. Data copied, personal details obtained.

  • @Lunar said:
I founded a 501(c)(3) non-profit called Unredacted, which operates services and infrastructure that help people evade censorship and protect their right to privacy.

Edit: To be clear, we are not operating any open proxies or censorship circumvention services on Hetzner IPs.

I think this is all the proof they got basically you are hosting a evade censorship website.

How hetzner could transfer data from server if it was law enforcement visit?
As I can understand server online till 31 Oct.
And op don't say that "my server go offline for 1hr" (for data copying)

If the servers are cloud servers, there was no visit, but Hetzner created live images and sent the data to the relevant authority. When they come to visit, they usually take the hard drives from the servers with them...

Looong before server shutdown traffic was closely monitored from the dc. Month, two or a year. Evidence gathered. When it is enough - hetz washes hands by removing bogus client.

OP probably pumped a cp traffic and now will be scrutinized by the law enforcement.

    @Lunar

As you seem to not have understood it yet: Germany (nowadays) is a particularly nasty country, nasty as in censorship, willy nilly declaring opposition parties as "undemocratic", suffocating dissenting voices, etc.

Based on what I've seen so far, incl. your statements, Hetzner got a regime request to terminate your account and/or services ... and they willingly complied, simple as that.

Side note: while Germany is a particularly nasty censor (yes, the term 'Stasi' increasingly matches) one should be aware that the driving force behind it is the EU and most eu-ropean countries go increasingly harder against free speech.

My advice: Use servers and services outside of Eu-rope.

For clarity, we've responded to each and every law enforcement request, and comply when required with the minimal amount of data that our services collect. We do not condone or support any illegal activity. We're not a "bullet proof" service, and we're not happy with abuse of our services.

We primarily focus on circumventing censorship in countries that have a high level of censorship or have repressive regimes (think China, Russia, Myanmar, etc).

It seems the consensus however is that Germany is not a safe place for our organization despite this, and we're looking at alternatives as a result.

We chose Hetzner because in the past, I haven't had a single problem with them. Their services are very affordable and the performance is great for what you pay. As a non-profit, we have to be conscious of our spending and we tend to operate very frugally to maximize the impact of our donor's money.

Either way, we are not concerned too much, because of our security policies: https://unredacted.org/about/security/

    @jsg said: undemocratic

Whoever thought the German Government would ever do something undemocratic, or would censor their citizens. Never in the history books would we see such insanity!

Anyway, I'm not surprised. There was multiple LET providers (NordicVPS? NexusBytes?) that got their Hetzner drives taken by the police, even though they knew full well the offending user had a single VM on the node and they were affecting hundreds of users.

This isn't hate on Hetzner. They're living by the rule of law on this. This is hate on mentally retarded governments.

I once opened an account and had to verify it using gov issued ID with my face and name clearly on it...
I did everything and next day my account was closed. Lol, I did not even create a server on their platform... I did receive an email from hetzner that day but no info was provided.
From that day I am using Vultr for most needs and layer.ae, webhorizon and greencloudvps from let for small scale use cases which i try for few months.

    Thanked by 1rsk
  • OpenBSD on VULTR are pure garbage - you get less than 100 Mbps on a 10G.
