Dedicated vs VPS vs Baremetal
I am the latest victim of Conatbos help desk responses (lack of)
I'm in my sixth hour of VPS being totally down with no response from the support desk.
This is second time in 6 months or so and I'm starting to worry after reading all their reviews and complaints
I was sort of happy with my vps but seems like a lot of effort to keep it running
So a few fairly simple questions for experienced users:
I've been looking to increase my server resources and am on a monthly plan at contabo
I have a year or so of partime experience constanly patching my almalinux8, cloudlinux and WHM vps
So how hard would a transition to baremetal or deditcated (VDS) be
Would I be in over my head with like a hetzner server?
What would the starting point be for it requiring skills that I haven't aquired from my VPS?
I don't want to buy somthing and then immediatley realize I'm in over my head
Would it be better to go with a VDS? What does it give me that baremetal doesn't?
I'm 75yo and don't want to learn a lot of new stuff but want the comfort that only knowledge can bring (VPS)
Where do you think I should go next? Just get a better VPS provider or upgrade while I'm making the move

You can provision your own VMs on a dedicated server and have more control of resources.
However, you will need to manage the hypervisor and depending on what you want to achieve, it can be a steep learning curve.
CloudLinux, Virtualizor / Proxmox and alternatives may help. You should ensure that the server is secure and actively monitored. It is not too hard to transition but you'll need to do some setting up and configuration.
I've been unable to confirm that Cloudlinux (I am using that over cpanel right now) can be a substitute for an OS. Doing server setup is what I want to avoid. I tried it and proxmox on my home server and but was never satisfied because of hypervisor and ip-pool issues
It's more for hosting providers, I think.
RunCloud might be worth looking into and I think it runs on VPS too.
There are a lot of 'in a box' tools but I personally avoid them. However, I am sure someone else may be able to add to the ones I've already mentioned.
Honestly unless you're running some important stuff it's probably best to just stick with what you have. Downtime can happen anywhere, and Contabo's pricing is really the best there is. Edit: Are you looking at Hetzner cloud or a Hetzner dedicated server? Their cloud/VPS services are excellent, so if you do switch off Contabo, you'll probably like the Hetzner cloud experience.
Moving a server full of websites isn't always straightforward but if you're running cPanel/WHM it's not going to be that hard. I'd always recommend running stuff like that in a virtual machine for the scalability.
I have been on similar road, from shared hosting, to vps, then to dedi
Most of part is same, except the installation might be little different than vps depends on your provider, some provides pre-made templates, some may require thing like IPMI or ask support to do it for you.
Once OS is installed, afterwards is pretty much same as on any VPS, you SSH in, run your commands to set up blah blah blah
but something like cPanel may require different license.
Migration should be relatively easy, I think WHM has its own tool for this propose

You're older than @Not_Oles . You're probably the oldest here. Congratulations on many more years.
Depending on what you are using your vps for you may not need to upgrade to something with more resources and a vps is good enough. I think what is best is to move to a provider that is more reliable whether that is Hetzner Cloud or another LET provider. There are plenty to choose from that can meet your needs and are willing to help.
@russromei
Welcome to LET!
Glad to meet you! We are two older guys here. I am 76.
By the way, it says on your profile that you work for a hosting provider. May I please ask what type of work you do for the hosting provider?
Thanks!
Tom
Thanks Tom, I pm'ed you
Yeah, I familiar with those things but had a failed attempt to use proxmox and ProxCP, but having no ip pool that combined, could price the VMs where I wanted
Definitely will look into this one after settling on webmin to provide what I was looking for
Well it is important stuff as I am a lowend hosting reseller in niche market. I want to spare myself the embarrassment of the server being down or worse, losing all my clients stuff because my upstream supplier screwed up or walked away. But I can't find a company that provides all the assets I need for my growing client base. A simple upgrade at contabo would really fit the bill. I worry about a migration fail and losing the 1K tweaks to the server that has the server load going from 6-8 to 2-3. I agree the downtime can happen , but am in dealing with contabo support as they REALLY make it hard for you to contact them and they don't answer until after it is back and running +4hours
If you still want to offer it on VPS then Hetzner Cloud is your best bet. Rock solid performance, fast support and no issues at all
Yes, this is really the answer I was looking for contabo aside. I just want to insure that I am in familiar territory.
He says I'm just a kid!
The problem I am finding is as a reseller companies other than contabo (OTC) are lite on the storage (1.6TB), which is why I am reluctant to leave
There is no cheap alternative like that. Plus you’re concerned with losing data, but it’s up to you to run your own backups, so a server losing data shouldn’t kill your business. Best to find a host that has a backup/snapshot feature but that’ll cost extra too..
I am sure that LET can help you find a more suitable host to migrate to. Just post a thread of the specs and budget you are looking for in Requests.
contabo has 2 snapshots, but must be done manually, daily. Have it going in whm, but cannot see how to backup full server (WHM), only accounts

I am concerned about the isp banning me
Am trying to backup server off site, but am stumped by the script they require you to provide
