Server for VPN in china

ditlevditlev Member, Top Host, Host Rep

I’ll be spending a few months in china and rather than using an external VPN I will setup my own, so I need a VPS with good network performance in china … any pointers?

Any idea on your bandwidth need? I have servers in Tokyo which can get you around 60-70ms to come provinces in China, but it's a high cost location.

We have Hong Kong NAT VMs which work well for this. I tried it myself earlier this year in China and performance was decent. Our Promo NAT plans are listed on https://www.mlnl.host, if you're looking for something more custom just let me know / DM me and we can figure something out for you.

To add - These VMs operate with a Dynamic IP line.

  • I would recommend khanwebhost. Their nat vps located in Japan or Singapore cost only $5/yr.
Specs are ovz7, 256mb ram + 20 available ports, 800gb bandwidth per month.
I've been using their JP VPS for a few days, got 70mbps and 40ms ping to jp (openvpn udp, from korea)

Take a look at our Nat services (Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore) for $7/year:

hmm - I've never tried setting up a VPN server behind NAT ... can that even be done?

  • To be honest, many LET providers do not have optimized networks for China, and the situation of China's three network operators is relatively complicated.

If you are looking for a simpler VPS service and do not need ChatGPT, etc., I recommend you to register with Alibaba Cloud and choose SAS server. You can get a relatively good access speed for $3.5 per month. Be sure to choose the Hong Kong node.

If you have other requirements, please be specific, such as specifying the country IP, budget, whether you need to access ChatGPT, Netflix, etc. It would be better if you know the operator of the network access at your address.

As for the client and protocol, it is a complicated matter. If an outdated protocol is selected, the VPS IP will be quickly blocked by GFW.

If you don't care about privacy, choosing a VPN provider is the most convenient option, such as Just My Socks. There are many VPN providers of all sizes that are more suitable for China. MJJ called them "Jichang" (Airport).

However, well-known providers such as ExpressVPN and NordVPN may not be suitable for China.

Usually NAT providers will assign you a set of ports which you can use.

Thanks for this - I've been to China many times, and GFW is certainly getting stronger and stronger over the years. I've only ever been able to get Astrill and Mullvad VPN to work on a sustained basis, and even those fail from time to time. So I thought doing a simple VPN server myself would be the better option. But ya, another option is to buy a global E-sim and just share hotspot when needed.

I do need chatgpt though, so Alibaba cloud is not an option.

several types of proxies or ovpn if only more than 1 ports available. You can use the installation script on github, it'll complete the settings in a minute! By the way, openvpn is probably blocked with more than 99% probability in China, so it would be better to set up like shadowsocks proxy. I think it's possible to set it up, I haven't done (shadowsocks) it myself.

You will have access to 20 ports over IPv4 and full range of ports over IPv6.

In case of countries such as China and Iran which have very restrictive DPI firewalls, we suggest using protocols that are designed for such situations such as VLESS-Reality

it's simple. All your need is to choose the right VPN protocol and suitable client APPs.IPv6 is a better choice than IPv4.

Nat services have limited support and because of that we cannot check VMs one by one. It's up to clients to let us know and we resolve the issue. Open a ticket and your surely will get a response.

Buy FastestVPN (I've been using it for over 5 years), a very good VPN with many countries.

AWS Lightsail JP/SG are pretty decent to all three ISPs. Nothing amazing but it'll work. Use Hysteria2 proxy, normal VPN protocols are fully blocked.

Maybe try Linode JP if you're on China Mobile.

For eSIM use CUniq https://www.cuniq.com/global/travel-Internet/TravelInternetDetail?goodsId=1021006, exits from HK and the latency is really good (China Optimized bandwidth)

  • if you buy from vpn services - then these services will definitely work
    1. https://www.astrill.com
    2. https://rocketvpn.net/cp/

  • You can also configure your service for more stable operation, for example using services such as -
    1. https://getoutline.org
    2. https://amnezia.org/en

  • will you consider a eSIM data roaming plan?

  • alibaba Hongkong vps is a good choice.

  • I used ESIM https://esimy.net/country/china/ once I was there and it worked well without need of VPN since somehow network was routed over EU.
