Too Good To Be True? €4.99 OVH KS-A is a BUG or Real Deal?

Everyone wants €4.99 OVH KS-A now.

I'm wondering KS-A has the wrong price tag?

If it's a real price, this will be OVH most sincere model since the fire in their data center.

It will make more people think that OVH is the most cost-effective and conscience company in the industry.

BUT...........

Will OVH suddenly announce in a month that the price of this model is a bug and will adjust the bill price to be correct?

(Of course, it is assumed that those who have opted for a 12-month commitment should not be affected during the commitment period.)

Will this happen?

Comments

  • knowing ovh, who knows

  • Dunno but it will never be in stock
    Except in a few years
5€ OVH atom servers were just as incredible and popular 10 years ago

  • I believe that they either have a limited amount (like 10 or smth) of these deals in stock and are using this for advertising or they will jack up the price like you said.

CPU worth around $40. RAM $30. Based on used parts, not well used parts. Not sure on hard drive specifications but 500GB SSD (not HDD) starts at about $30 brand new. 100Mbps which is rate limited as OVH do have higher speeds as standard. A lot of web hosting providers don't offer much more though even if they've got 10G ports.

These chips were End Of Life in 2017/2018. DDR6 could be released as soon as Q4 2024 or early 2025. DDR3 End Of Life 2018/2019 (Samsung + Hynix).

Assuming these are parts that would have been recycled, the offer adds up. A lot of companies sell these off as rent / lease to own as they'll make more than disposal.

Until they don't work or run out of similar interchangeable parts, I guess.

Will see, did deploy my "Operation Chicken Nugget" again.
If it comes in stock again, I will post YABS, otherwise I will suffer for the rest of the year.

Probably just a joke from Octave.

My gut feeling or a tax / sales / cost of sales alignment. OVH were funded by French Government (€200+ million) and are debt financed. They operate in the minus despite huge revenue but big clouds and investors seek market share first. Maybe trying to grow more.

    Yes. 100 % this.

But they want the startup clientele. The public cloud clients. The companies that might grow.

I can’t see why they’re willing to lose money and cause support load for sweaty $7 Debian thx specialists.

Only possible reason I can think is that it’s cheap advertising. They want to keep a €5 server and since they’ve thrown away Atom, this was their picked specs. They could have gone with 32 GB of RAM, but instead choose 64 GB and made it very rare. A marketing stunt of low scale.

    That’s my guess at least.

Everyone furiously reloaded (probably still do) in order to get that deal...then paid 10€ for setup fees and were handed an N450 and a hard drive with 80,000 hours on a 100mbps connection.

    But hey, it's dedicated...

OVH played this card very well.
Why invest $100K in Google Ads monthly while people ignore your ad when you can throw them some too-good-to-be-true offers that people want to talk about?
The simple reason that everyone knows about this possibility of getting a server at an unbeatable price will make some people browse for other packages and buy some of them.

  • Quebec, where the OVH BHS datacenter is located, has a lot of hydroelectric power, offers low electricty rates for large customers. Industrial power can be had for $14.234/month per kilowatt of billing demand, plus 3.619¢ per kw/h. (Ref: https://www.hydroquebec.com/data/documents-donnees/pdf/electricity-rates.pdf). No idea what rates they get but if average system power is <100w it looks at least possible.

At 100 watts average system power ten would cost ~ $14.234 + 3.619c * 720 = $40.29/month to power which is ~$4.03 each. Get average system power or electricity rates lower and it at least looks doable.

    They don’t care
    It's a marketing loss leader
The number will be very limited, they won't build them to keep up with demand.

That's nothing given OVH's size and financial resources.

  • Sometimes there are such offers to attract customers. Kimsufi has always been like that.

  • I really want to try
