Telegram messaging app CEO Durov arrested in France
Telegram is one of my favorite apps. This is really bad news.

Saw this an hour ago. Doesn't surprise me to be honest, lots of drama around the "illegal" telegram groups for the past 2 years.
Same.
Except Telegram is my favorite and clearly the best messenger app these days.
Another important note: some sources say Durov was put on a wanted list just a few minutes before the landing in Paris, and an arrest warrant was issued:
I don't really get the appeal of telegram when you have other apps like Signal which enable features like e2e everywhere by default. I don't think they will be able to keep him in jail for long though.
Exceptional number of (killer) features and superior convenience.
Some French sources say he could face up to 20 years in prison.
I believe so far it's mostly blah-blah, but terrorism, drugs, and child porn could result in something quite serious.
Hmm maybe - its hard for me to compare I guess - its very rare in North America to see someone using Telegram - I see Signal more often(which is still rare!) then I ever see Telegram. I suppose it is different in other parts of the world.
True but I think this would only apply if they were ignoring reports on messages that were not e2e and in that case I think we will have to wait to see the defense's argument for more context.
Yes, Telegram isn't very common, (very) unfortunately.
Just try it yourself.
Bots (which you can deploy to your idling VPSes), channels, group chats, native desktop client (no effing Electron!), large file exchange, etc.
If you run some business, you can replace Slack in your company.
Something similar can be done if you have a large family or just maintain a family chat/group/etc.
P.S.
I use unofficial/secondary clients both on my phone and desktop, can advise if necessary.
I will probably look into it one day - I think the largest e2e app used in the US is, by far, iMessage which is post quantum e2e encrypted by default; however, you can recover the encryption key in iCloud backups with a warrant unless you enable advanced data protection or whatever which most people do not.
Pavel knowingly landed that he was going to get arrested lol.
I never had any Apple devices, so can't tell myself. Just don't like what they do and how they promote and position themselves.
But I wouldn't trust them in terms of privacy - I highly doubt they don't cooperate with the agencies. No wonder Apple hardware is banned in Chinese public sector.
Spread the #FREEDUROV tag there then
Be sure to add the mascot:
Telegram customer support rarely answer/help with "customer" issues.
Maybe some high ranking politicians got pissed when they didn't get help from Telegram CS. Now it's a Payback!?
As it turns, he has French citizenship. Russian authorities will have hard times helping him.
Durov a year before arrest: “I agree that France is the best holiday destination”

I guess he now has a chance to observe French life in more depth. Russians knew proverb: "от тюрьмы и сумы не зарекайся", this means roughly that every person can go to prison or become broke in life.
I don't think that we need two threads on this
