baremetal with 12 disk sata with proxmox
Hello Guys,
I'm kinda new with proxmox, last time i use ESXi and now i want to use proxmox but i need some advice. Better with zfs disk raid 10 (non raid hardware) or using raid 10 hardware then install proxmox. i have already have other proxmox node with cluster but i want to use this one as storage and able to create some vm.
Thank you

IMO add a small NVMe/SSD disk for Proxmox and then just add the disks as a hardware RAID array
is it safe just use all the disk as zfs when installing proxmox (eg. raid 10) ?
I think he want to say, small SSD NVMe for Proxmox main OS. Then add disks RAID for guest VPS.
yes but i don't have any ssd; just 12 disk of sata
how much RAM do you have?
96GB
how much of that can be written off to ZFS ARC?
what do you mean by written of to ZFS ARC ?
if you dont know what that means its probably best not to use ZFS
i see, so its better i install proxmox with regular raid 10 hw. Thank you but i'm impressed with zfs, they have a looot better iops than my raid 10 SSD
how much of that can be written off to ZFS ARC?![]
i would perhaps use HW raid and lab ZFS within a VM until you learn how it works
zfs is absolutely God King tier but if you use it wrong you will have terrible performance, so learn how it works and get some experience first in a safe VM lab
with ZFS, RAM is your friend. the more you have, the better. regular established norm is 1GB RAM per 1TB of storage for ARC, plus 8-16GB RAM for ZFS alone
then you generally want a NVME L2ARC (cache device), and another NVME or NVME partition for a log device
then you will get the full benefit of zfs
Yeah, i'm learning about zfs and things include L2ARC and i its RAM hunger. I want to learn to use zfs and do some experiment.
Thank you for all the information you write here, i really appreciate and make me want to learn more.
