Madcityservers lost my data
Hi,
This is going to be my review of Madcityservers. I’m going to cancel my plan with them after this. I initially bought their Megapower plan (i9-14900K, 24 GB ram, 360 GB) for $16.25 in March. Everything was going well for first 2 months and I got through my studies with it, but I shouldn’t have continued using it.
Around mid-May, my VPS was down. They switched from VirtFusion to WHMCS Proxmox Modules Garden without telling me (yes, this was an absolute control panel downgrade imo). They spontaneously execute things like this without properly informing or letting me know ahead of time. They literally use the flash messages in their billing panel to tell you important stuff. I rather much prefer more direct communication like emails. They don’t even tell you when the transfer was completed, so I waited patiently for 4 days until I opened a ticket and asked them. It turned out that they needed to reset the password on my VPS, and I was in. It was annoying because my programs were giving me alarms that my RSA fingerprint host key changed, so I have to reconfigured a lot of stuff.
In the week of July 21, I’ve been experiencing a lot of random reboots. I thought to myself that it isn’t a coincidence ever since the news that the Intel i9-14900K chip has been degrading over time.
On July 25, the day before the total data loss disaster, my programs were once again alerting me that my RSA fingerprint host key has changed. I have no idea why since there wasn’t a transfer and I had to reconfigure all of my programs again.
On July 26, disaster struck, my VPS was down. As a usual part of their silent practices, I have to login into the billing area to check their flash messages to see what’s going on. To my surprise, they lost all my data. I took them as coming a bit hostile because they were like you should have kept backups. Well, YOU should NOT lose my data. The operator (Brian W) wasn’t even apologetic at any point in our communications or in the tickets. I get that they’re being blunt and direct about it, but I would’ve appreciate a ‘sorry’ or something.

I have a suspicion that this was a human fuck up and not because of some hardware RAID failure. My VPS had an IPXO IP announced by Reliablesite, so this was most likely an i9-14900K dedicated server from Reliablesite. I might be wrong, but I don’t think they offer hardware RAID on this configuration (https://www.reliablesite.net/dedicated-servers/24-Core-server/intel-core-i9-14900K-192GB).
So yeah, avoid Madcityservers if you don’t like spontaneous surprises. They won’t reach out to you first, you have to reach out to them. They won’t communicate important events with you in a timely manner via email. Instead, events are displayed as easily overlooked “Notices” in their billing panel. Lesson learned that I should’ve kept my own server backups locally.

You made an agreement with Madcityservervs that you where responsible for backups.
In other words: YOU lost your data.
Their terms:
What was stopping you from backing up your data?
I demand answers.
It likely is just due to Samsung drives. I've also had I think two instances of data loss from Samsung NVMe with RSNET suddenly both dying at the same time; not RSNET's fault here, but definitely incredibly annoying. Even in mirrored mdadm raid it doesn't help. I'd be almost certain that MCC had a system with Samsung drives that failed (they are using mdadm sw raid). MCC's response is odd that they are still having issues so I'd hope they removed the Samsung drives and had different brands put in. From my experience I think it has to do with the memory controller on the NVMe drives dying and nothing else. I also had two Samsung drives of my own have this issue. Samsung RMAd them no questions asked.
My solution was to get rid of all Samsung 980/990 Pro M.2 drives. No issue since then.
RAID is NOT Backup
Backup is not backup. Print it all, laminate, lock in fireproof safe.
i just wanted to say your profile pic is scary.
@boot i am scared what can i do.
Next time take Hetzner, problem solved it's also cheaper
I don't like the language used by either party here
Party 🥳
a no pants party -- hell yeAH
Hell yeah
Thanks for your review. Just the title is already comedy gold. It's impossible for someone else to lose your data, because (as the wording implies), it's your data so your responsibility to make sure it's backed up.
Don't be scared, I'm here.
Thanks Freek, but we might need to borrow what @ChrisMiller has
A SecretLab chair?
hahahhah
don't get him mad.
he throws anything everything at anyone
Technically the title is correct. It's his data but it's not his server. madcityservers lost his data. 100% accurate. Backups are never real-time so it's retarded to assume 0% loss when a server dies.
Will need to wait till I'm back state side. Haha
I'm currently in the most southern Major City in Brazil doing some stuff. Also hanging out at a Brazilian Gun Club. (Totally unrelated to what I am doing here)
No a Steel Series HeadSet... DOH...
enjoy the stay and have safe journey to back home.
No no, madcityservers went to his house and took his backup drives and "lost" them along with any digital copies he had on cloud storage. I am sure this was the case. I am sure @landnever is smart enough to keep regular backups of his data and would definitely not blame his host for his/her/their own mistake, right?
💀
no backup after the first incident in may?
you lost your data.
Madcityservers is a decent service with shitty ass admins.
"We are adding a more modern and secure web theme. There are something that are not working yet. We working to correct those issues." - VirtFusion are the best, including UI and the price.
Either way, you deserve a better provider.
