VPS to handle 20k traffic spike on WordPress website

taalztaalz Member

I need a VPS that can handle a spike on a WordPress website. During a special event, the website gets 20k hits in an hour for upto 4 or 5 hours. So what kind of solution we have for it?

This is 5 page views per second: 2 or 3 dedicated cores on NVMe should be abundant. These configurations start at 8 €/month.

  • Morning,

As davide stated, 5 pages views a second is nothing for a modern VPS, however and this is me personally, I have run many sites that get that much traffic and much more. Not knowing more then your site is a Wordpress site, its much harder to judge this for you, however and this again is just my personal thoughts, I would use Linode and grab one of there $12/m VM's and test it. Setup a barebones server, * again without knowing yoru entire setup * try different combinations example WordOps + Redis, or LiteSpeed, things like that. +1 for WordOps.

Also this way with Linode as the example here, if the $12 account is just quite not enough, you can bump it to the next level with a reboot. Also with the hourly billing, you can get the bigger VPS that you need or even overkill for a day or two and save yourself a lot of headaches.

    My 2cents.
    Anthony

We have a client who gets high load like this, our amd 7950x VPS handles it fine

https://oplink.net/vps-specials/ Pro or Premium plus should get the job done

It also helps if your WordPress theme isn't bloated & full of bad coded plugins. Plus you should use cloudflare and a CDN for all images.

Thank you all. I missed one requirement.
There's an online purchase through woocommerce that happens in this particular time. I tried VPS through BlueHost but they go down.

I'm talking about a 20k traffic in 1 to 2 hours, not per month. It's a spike that needs to be handled. One best solution I came across is to have an elastic server of AWS.

We possible give you a dedicated server

    2x e5-2699 v4 88 threads
    128 GB ram
    4x 960 GB SSD raid 10
    1 Gbs dedicated port speed
    330$/month

I thing this it's enought to running this amount of users

Go for Kinsta. They are fast and professional.

  • i use 2 vps with 1core and 1gb ram on both to handle 3big wp site. daily around 40k user. but there is a change on load if i use one server, it can't handle. if i use nginx reverse proxy, both vps have almost 98% idle. so try 3-4gb ram with atleast 2 powerful cpu vcore and nginx reverse proxy. it may help.

That's a good solution. The overall cost on these two VPS are also less. Thanks.

any shared hosting with 2GB RAM, 2CPU with caching can save you from managing vps.
