Looking for 10Gb colocation in Europe for tower-size server

Hello everyone,

I upgraded my server to 10Gb ethernet and suddenly I am having a hard time finding a new home for it, i.e. a 10Gb colocation provider in Europe that would accept a mid tower sized server. It would be nice if it wasn't super expensive but I guess I would prefer a reputable, reliable provider with a decent peering. My 10Gb nic can take either RJ45 or SFP+.

Anybody has any suggestion? I asked Hetzner, but waiting for their response.

Thanks a lot in advance!

P.S.: it wouldn't technically need to be in Europe but I am not giving my server out of my hands until I deliver it to the datacentre, so the only possible means of transportation is a car or a train.

Try M247. They are kinda the most stable I worked with and, at least in RO, I saw some towers colocated there as well (mostly as 4RU servers).

We would be able to offer this as long as you make the hardware rack mountable, it would probably be cheaper to convert it to an 2U/4U chassis, as this would save you on monthly fees.

Feel free to message us on our livechat or through this platform to receive an quotation :)

The dimensions of the mid tower case are roughly 50x45x20cm (19.6x17.7x7.8"). Theoretically, if I put the server on its side it would fit into a standard 19" wide rack and it would take a vertical space of 5U. The depth of the rack would have to be at least 20" if it shouldn't stick out in the front or in the back. But this would never work because the server would have to levitating. I would have to attach some kind of rails to the tower case but the case is not prepared for it.

What seems to me the most readily doable is a 1/3 rack, i.e. 14 unit rack space in a 19" rack just like Hetzner offers. Then I would put a 1U heavy duty shelf at the bottom, like this: https://www.amazon.de/-/en/dp/B008X3JIQI, and on it the tower server, standing. At the top there would be still a few inches left for the upper fans to blow the air out.

So I guess my question is - is there a 10Gb provider which would rent me a 1/3 rack (14 unit rack space) and be ok with me putting there a rack shelf and on it a tower server?

As royal said you will want to put this into a rack mount chassis if possible to get the best prices from people.

I would again recommend m247. They really don't care what you put in your dedicated rack space.
    https://m247.com/eu/services/host/datacenters/
They have presence in multiple countries. You may find something close to you.

We also offer 1/3rd rack colocation, or even multiple full racks, however, we would still recommend converting it to a rack-mountable chassis to save on monthly expenses.

If you could contact us through livechat or this platform we would be happy to provide a quotation for both options :)

10G Uplink and Billing per TB will make it arround 60€/m plus bandwidth plus Power on top

  • Thank you very much everyone for all your suggestions, I am contacting the providers.

  • Hello everyone, if anyone was wondering how my odyssey for a 10Gb colocation (mid-tower or 1/3 rack) in the EU turned out, here is the result: not one single provider that was suggested here and I contacted came through with an actual quote. Not one.

After a very long back and forth with Hetzner sales I received enough information from them, so here they are, perhaps it could help somebody else too. They don't care what I put in their 1/3 rack (as long as it's not flammable) so it could be a non-mountable tower server. Their 1/3 racks have solid bottoms so I don't need to install a shelf there. Out of 14U space there will be only 13U actually available because they will install 1U panel there which supports "single mode cable with LC plugs, or DAC cable". Price wise (excluding VAT), the standard (1Gb) pricing will be increased by a one-time €299 and monthly €99 and the standard 1Gb uplink will be deactivated. There will also be an additional one-time €499 for "fiber optic cabling from the meet-me-room to the colocation racks". The 10Gb colocation doesn't include any traffic, the price is €1/TB.

If your tower server fits into 5U, we can offer:

    5U Colocation (300W power included)
    10Gbps Port(SFP+/10GBASE Copper)

    1Gbps Flat 95/5
    Anti DDoS included
    Free setup

    Location: Equinix FR7

    Price: 250 EUR / monthly

There are no limits on the 1G Flat, you are allowed to use it 24/7.

However, you need to supply some universal rail kit to "rack" your server.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I think @tubehosting or @jh_aurologic might be able to do colocation for tower. Also active servers, and ipprojects

Active servers gave the most bizarre response yet:

    Hallo,

we dont offer colocation right now

EDIT: it seems colocation with them might be possible after all.

This offer is for 5U, you asked for one tower server. Are you interested in 13U with a few servers colocated?

I am not sure what that means. Is that a shared rack where owners of other servers would have physical access to my server?

No, other customers have no access to our cabinets at Equinix.

It's a shared cabinet but as I already said, no customer has access.

Which means that I would have no access either. So how does this work then when I need to access my server for repairs/modifications/upgrades? I would wait in some kind of waiting room and you would disconnect and demount my server and carry it to me?

No, we dont do tower. A server is not a office pc and so should come in a proper server like chassis ;-)

We offer customers to come and visit the DC together with us or we can do remote hands when we are on site for free(Server maintenance etc).

Otherwise, we have to ask Equinix to do certain tasks if it's an emergency.

I see, so in this case what would be the cost for 13U 10Gb colocation, up to 150W, up to 10TB/month traffic?

    2x10Gbps with 1Gbps Flat
    /28 IPv4 and /48 IPv6 prefix

However, since you are colocating towers, we have to add a fee on top:

    Total: 550 EUR monthly

With annual payment I could offer the following at the skylink-data-centre in the Netherlands:

    1 midi tower space
    150 Watt maximum consumption
    10 GBit/s Uplink
    10 TB traffic

    969 € / year
