ITT: bro learned to get a APC Back-UPS Pro 1500 due to... running a data-center in Romania.

I remember teaching Manny @ HostDime when he leased a penthouse abondoned UUNET DC in Florida why we needed the same. He learned and in time we ditched it (AC was too heavy for roof there) and got an abandoned aircraft hangar in Maitland. I coined the term DimeNOC, and we had our first DC. OC3 with TWTelecom, calling every week to upgrade the line... the good days.

Anyaway, UPS sort of crucial, as generators take a few minutes, and most will be brownouts of 1-2 seconds due to grid design. Downtown Orlando's power grid during the summer 20 years ago was on par with a Romanian residential power grid on a good day I imagine.

Put all the smaller stuff on separate smaller UPS, and 1 per server to ride it out.

Good luck and may you become as stable as host_c and... well Calin one day.

I won't use my personal setup without one considering how bad our powergrid is, can't fathom running someone else's infrastructure without making 110% sure my solution is doing what it's supposed to do. Amateur stuff.

Not to rub salt into the wound, or turn the knife etc, but this is the 13-month uptime of my basement workstation, with UPS on car batteries

This made my day. Big fan calin. Know you since you started selling swap as ram and lying about your age. Oh and remember when someone used to mess with your website like 5 years ago? That was ghita, I was in a call with him. But I can say you've made some progress.

Telling customers you won't invest 1000 to 5000 euro just so their machines aren't annoyed anymore is crazyyy. There's no way a real business would straight up announce they are aware of the issues but won't fix due to the "high" cost. This screams basement more than calin's. And that's probably a more remote area, cause here in Bucharest the power is pretty stable and usually goes down like 2-3 times a year.

Hetzner cloud prices for what? Just seems like you should cater to non experienced people, not lowendtalk

Wait what?! Swap as a ram? Maybe a link to a thread with this gold would be good.

That was way before I joined lowendtalk so don't really know. But I've had insight in the Romanian hosting community for years before I couldn't give a shit anymore. But I can say 100% that happened, I know about calin before he had ihostart, but can't remember the old name.

PS: it was not "temporary" as he says. it was like that for years. and not marketed as swap.

Oh and Călin I hope you don't trust Ghita anymore for anything, as he used to shit talk you like everyday. I cut ties with him (I just had shitboxes w him) after he literally sold me one of his partners' (and my competition) domain for 50 euro.

I understand what you are saying but I would like you to understand me too.
One is to switch from one UPS to two and another is to switch from 1000 to 1001. Do you know what I'm saying? :)

What might help you a bit is load distribution on different phase, like having equipment connected with dual psu on L1+L2 and L2+L3. Usually switching operations on the grid (at least in Germany) are done one-by-one. In Romania it might be similar. If your infrastructure is single-phase, what I suspect, you should consider changing that.

I do periodically see here small grid outages lasting like 0-20 seconds, but usually never on all three phase at once. UPS taking over even a phase is gone, generator starts within 10 seconds but never sees load if it's not like more than 15 seconds to close the generators breaker.

The question is, does the basement / garage have three phase power?

I tried mounting swapfile over SSHFS, when I wanted to compile OpenVC on Raspberry Pi Zero and needed more memory.
    The system crashed instantly.

He is mono phase. I told him last year but he did not listen. To much investment.

We have a saying in Romania that fits perfectly with my situation "for the poor, not even the oxen pull".
I ordered the UPS 2 days ago, I paid for it in advance and today, when it should have been delivered to our location (after the supplier in turn supplied himself with new batteries), I was informed that the UPS received batteries but we have a problem. It is irrelevant to say what the problem is. I had also received an extra discount even though the price already had a 15% discount, but I am afraid to order a UPS that comes defective from the seller (even if the problems did not affect its functionality in theory), with only a 12-month warranty.
At the moment I have a choice between opting for a new (and very expensive) UPS or waiting another 10 days until the respective supplier receives new pallets of UPS.

    Let the dog make decision:

    • If dog raises left paw, new UPS.
    • If dog raises right paw, new pallets.
