BackupSheep soon to be free & open to self-host
Got this email:
Hi there,
I have an exciting update for you! The complete codebase will be uploaded to GitHub in the next few days, available here: https://github.com/bilal414/backupsheep.
In order to make application more suitable for individual use, I’ve completely rewritten the application. It utilizes a technology stack comprising Django, AlpineJS, and PostgreSQL.
I'm planning to release several opensource SaaS applications & tools in coming weeks.
Additionally, I will be posting regular updates on X/Twitter regarding the project's progress and future enhancements. Please follow me to stay informed. https://twitter.com/bilal414
Thank you for your support!

that's mailcow
Such an interesting and unexpected news, thanks for sharing!
Curious to see how it evolves.
That’s cool!
I wonder why it’s all being open sourced
Yup, might replace all my Docker backup services with this if it's stable. Seems unreal to get this suite for free.
Because they've closed down, so why not get some public credit for it I guess.
Really good!
Would be a great alternative to simplebackups!
It got a good customer base with some LTD deals sold on appsumo, wondering why then they've shut it down all of sudden, it seems weird.
Not really all of a sudden. I remember getting an email about it, I believe sometime last year. The notification said that they're closing and that they'll release the code after some time, and now it's been quite the number of months.
Maybe it's a way to give back to those buying the LTD deals too I guess.
Is there open source similar service?
Lol, that's exactly why they shut down. Never sell lifetime deals. Your expenses come every month on the dot.
It also devalues your subscription in the future as everyone will want the lifetime pricing.
BackupSheep
Automating backups is costly and takes time. With BackupSheep, you can quickly automate server snapshots and offsite backups - without writing code.
Important
The code will be available for upload in the coming days. It utilizes a technology stack comprising Django, AlpineJS, and PostgreSQL. Essentially, this is a revised version of the BackupSheep codebase, modified to be more suitable for personal use.
@emgh - did you lose money with their lifetime deal? It's because of Backupsheep, Rootpal, theconnected.app, Pixelhost etc that I lost faith in lifetime hosting deals and ended up in the lowend VPS market!
Hey @SirFoxy - where have you been?
Hi @meditatingsurgeon
Working/Bali haha
Pretty complex stack. 100% core will be open sourced and most useful features paid as an addon. And of course “corporate support”.
when hyderabad/banglore
Copy/paste of github README. What the huge effort here lol
Early 2025, probably January. Bengaluru specifically
Why Bengaluru? (I'm surprised that you didn't say Bangalore).
Half of my partner's family lives out there. I like it too, it definitely feels like India's Silicon Valley to me.
Nah, never purchased it. Not even their monthly/yearly plans. Just free. But I’ll 100 % try out the open-source version.
I hate the idea of lifetime deals as a business owner, so I agree with that, but I wouldn’t be so sure that’s the single reason they shut down. Plenty of competition.
Let’s hope not.
I’m fine with paid support though.
Bilal claims no paywall/paid addons.
at some point in future, there might be commercial support or a hosted version.
Give me a date whenever you're in Banglore and we shall meet.
I'm surprised about the second part too.
