Yeah looks to be connected at 40gig, insane for the price although I doubt anywhere in Africa can actually saturate that 40gig.
Our host nodes are connected to the ToRs via a 2x40Gbps link, but our transit and peering ports in Johannesburg are all 10Gbps and the maximum throughput to external networks is only 20Gbps (if ECMP works as expected). We have 100Gbps ports in other locations, but it's just too expensive in Africa, and we don't really have that much traffic here.
Just curious, what's the nomenclature behind "6682-3197" in "6682-3197.jnb01.za.misaka.io"?
It's the hex value of the IPv4 address :-D
@aveline I see you in the zanog telegram. youβre south african?
Is the coupon also eligible for those other listed vps offers in Johannesburg w/ higher specs or where do I find those attractive discounts? And is it recurring?
One of my favorite low-key providers
Yeah it's the same coupon, the 1c2g one is just the smallest instance you can use the coupon on.
Patiently waiting on the NA upgrades
No, I am not South African, but I am active in the NOG community and enjoy participating in it. π
Yes, the coupon does apply to the other VPS offers in Johannesburg with higher specifications. And to confirm, yes, the discount is recurring.
We haven't forgotten it :-)
Same, just renewed my yearly in Berlin that I picked up last year. It's been so good I almost keep forgetting about it.
My dear aveline
Can you give me a super discount?
I think the biggest super discount should go to an actual South African... and we are poor, so I'm willing to volunteer and be the one!
On the other end, pricing is placed so niche that I do not see good reason anyone would use this other than some fancy Anycast, DNS, probe/ping locations etc. I mean up to $15 for 1CPU/1GB VPS is insane nowdays
Yes, the price does seem steep compared to regular LEx specials, BUT servers in South Africa is mostly insanely expensive... and this is a really good price
I'm getting 19ms to the Jhb test IP π
usually I have to be 'happy' with <180ms for a EU one
sigh, but alas... even though it is a great price, $55, is not $7... hmmm how long can I go without food to save?
I am more talking about Vienna, Zagreb, Milan, Warsaw which does sound more niche than Amsterdam or Berlin but neither power or bandwidth should be more expensive than in Dublin or London.
Also, I do not think 1GB RAM nowdays is usable for anything other than Bind or simple static site (in which case just deploy it in S3)
I'm afraid that this is the best discount we can offer at this time :-(
Glad to hear you're loving the low latency at our JNB site! Yeah, pricing's a bit steep there β it's our priciest Core location because of the high costs of things like power and IP Transit.
We're doing our best to balance costs and top-notch performance. Thank you so much for understanding. And hey, please don't skip any meals for us! π
Great points about the data center locations! Just to add a bit more detail, the sites you mentioned are our Edge locations. Since we don't own the equipment or network there, the costs are higher, especially considering factors like density and flexibility. We're actually working on an update for our application that will give more context and explanations when you're choosing an Edge site.
We've thought about upgrading some of these sites to Core, but with rising power costs and a tight team (we're a bit short on hands to handle further upgrades and expansions), we've had to put that plan on hold in Europe.
And yeah, you're right about 1GB of RAM. It's really just for basic stuff now. For anything more demanding, there are definitely better options out there.
Are you hiring ?
Are you hiring?
Last day folks - if I'm not mistaken.
And oh boy this is likely the best vps offers you'll ever see in ZA.
(Still don't know how the DC can handle those power production and power grid problems in ZA but we'll see)
But this looks great:

This is the S3N3-4C6G plan.
looks cool, will there be any discount plan in other regions ?
