  • Plants Make You Happy

One consistent finding across numerous studies is that nature—walking in it, looking at it, even thinking about it, tends to boost happiness. For example, in one study of prisoners it was found that those with views from their cells of surrounding landscape suffered fewer stress-related illnesses than those prisoners who did not have the views.

  • Yellow Actually Is a Happy Color

Instead of "feeling blue," it might be more accurate to say someone is "feeling gray." Those who are feeling anxious or depressed were found to actually associate their mood with the color gray—selecting variations of the monochromatic color from a color wheel presented to them by researchers from the University Hospital South Manchester. In contrast, healthy participants were most likely to point to the color yellow (especially Yellow 14) as the mood they were feeling. The researchers proposed the color wheel as an effective method for helping detect affective disorders, but it also points to the potential mood-boosting power of sunny colors.

    LINUX FACTS

In the US, Linux is most popular in the states of Utah and California.

Now to just get the other states to realize that Microsoft and Apple are nothing but evil.

LOL. True. If it weren't for some apps that don't run natively on Linux, I'd have completely abandoned Windows already.

There are a lot of great technologies centered around WINE to do just that.
There's PlayOnLinux (PlayOnMac), Lutris, Bottles, and I'm sure others I don't know about.

Yah, but, apps like Premiere Pro and stuff aren't great to run on Wine. Moreover, I recently got into Linux, esp. after the PS4 Linux project. Windows has been my primary OS for decades. Hard to let go now and move completely to a different OS. So, for now, I am juggling between the two, in hopes of one day, moving completely to Linux.

You can also run a Windows virtual machine on top of Linux for certain applications. I did this for a friend that wanted to run Quickbooks on Linux.

Yah, but, believe me, it can be troublesome, esp. getting GPU passthrough for GPU acceleration on video editing apps and such.

VMWare does a great job with GPU passthrough for video if you set it up. I remember playing Windows games on Linux that way over 10 years ago & they worked great!

Thanks for this. Will look into this in my free time.

  • Good morning everyone! How's the party going? Everyone excited?

  • I guess everyone's tired after late night real life parties. Let me keep the party up by sharing some facts.

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

Over 50 tons of trash are left in Times Square after New Year’s Eve celebrations.
About 3,000 pounds of that is confetti — that's a lot to clean up!

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

The confetti dropped in Times Square is holding secret messages.
The confetti in Times Square has thousands of people's wishes written on them. In 2015 "wishfetti" became a part of the tradition. People write their wishes for the new year and submit them to the Wish Wall in Times Square (or online) and those wishes are turned into the confetti that falls over the crowd at midnight.

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

Many Brazilians welcome the New Year at the beach.
It is considered good luck to make seven wishes while jumping seven waves — so you can count on a good old New Year's beach party down in Rio de Janeiro!

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

If you hear plates breaking in Denmark on New Year’s Eve, it’s considered good luck.
The Danes hold a tradition of throwing plates at the front door of family and friends’ homes to welcome good fortune for the new year.

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

ABC's 'New Year’s Rockin’ Eve' show is a long standing tradition.

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

You can thank a pope for making our new year start on January 1.
The Gregorian calendar was introduced in October of 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII as a revised version of the Julian calendar. It took almost 350 years for the world to get on board. Turkey didn't make the switch until 1927.

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

The reason January is called January is actually kind of deep.
It's been widely reported that the month was named for the Roman god Janus, but it's actually rooted in the Latin word "ianua," which means door. The name was chosen to symbolize the opening of a new door that happens when the new year begins.

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

Baby New Year is actually really old.
Baby New Year has been a symbol of the holiday since around 600 B.C., starting in ancient Greece when an infant was paraded around in a basket in celebration of Dionysus, the god of fertility (and wine). The baby represents a rebirth that occurs at the start of each new year.

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

The guy credited with Auld Lang Syne didn't fully write it.
Robert Burns took a Scottish folk song called "Old Long Syne" and put his own spin on it in 1788, which is the version we all know today. Auld lang syne means "times long past."

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

Time balls were invented to help sailors.
Long before it was used on New Year's Eve, a ball on top of England's Royal Observatory in Greenwich was dropped at 1 p.m. every day (starting in 1833) to help ship captains coordinate their navigation equipment. Similar balls were set up in coastal areas around the world.

  • NEW YEAR FACTS

The first Times Square New Year's party was thrown for a newspaper.
The annual tradition of gathering in Times Square for New Year's started as a party to celebrate the opening of the New York Times building in 1904. Over 200,000 people attended.
