    @noob404 -- It is quite antiquated/old school nowadays, we retired our OpenVZ product line IIRC in ~2020 and gave all of our clients that were still on OpenVZ, a free upgrade to our KVM virtualization product line.

    Consumers prefer KVM, and also from a provider perspective, KVM is much better as its "full" virtualization whereas OpenVZ is "containers". With OpenVZ there are certain modules (i.e. TUN/TAP) that need to be enabled from the host node side, also it shares the host node kernel with every container so VM's are unable to run their own kernels. With KVM you can also mount/install your own ISO, which is awesome.

    Yah, I only have experience with KVM, as of now. Saw some offers on OVZs and they were comparatively cheaper. I wondered what the catch was. Now, it seems that OpenVZ would be a headache if a project is to be scaled up. Thanks for that explanation.

    BTW, any suggestion for backing up my Ubuntu VPS before running an update?

    Close, LXC is also very similar to OpenVZ but can't be said to be exact same thing.

    To add to the conversation, OVZ, LXC, any containerization limits your VM to only features that are enabled by the host/containerization type. Not everything works on containers, if you need something really low level, it might not work. Some providers do enable features on request, but not everything is possible. On the other hand, KVM is a full virtualized environment, so you can do whatever you want. It may not be optimal, but will work if you have enough resources.

    Got it. Have some experience with LXC working on Proxmox, but OpenVZ is alien to me. Thanks a lot, everyone.

    There was one more, Xen and it was pretty awesome before KVM got his fame.

    Yeah, heard about Xen and ESXi as well. These are mostly used by huge corporates I believe.

    I still remember the days on LEB when Xen and OpenVZ were quite popular :) Nowdays, you rarely hear of these two. KVM definitely took the fame :)

    I have used a bunch of Xen servers in past and the switch from OVZ to Xen was remarkable then entered the KVM QEMU and everyone forgot the OVZ and Xen.
