Perhaps he has 10k $3/yr VPSes doing it...
My opinion: if you don't use it, keep it that way. Don't do stuff that is just burning bandwidth, because, in the end, then the real sweet deals will disappear, and the LowEnd community will in general benefit more from "nice deals with the ability to use some substantial bandwidth" as opposed to "host another proxy" where abusers will benefit from...
lol, are they really paying ?
$0.6 / month ?
not enough to buy a cup of coffee
I've received payouts about 13 times already. And yes, they're not enough for a cup of Tim Hortons, but some VPSs cost less than $1 per month
I don't mean to say it's profitable, but it's nice to have when you have too many toys.
1/month doesn't mean unlimited bandwith, saw repocket claim to have $0.2 / gb, which kind of bullshit, but it doesn't hurt to try lol.
Docker or repocket is better ?
If one can run a Tor Exit node, that would be great. There are many guides on how to do it. Please read provider terms and conditions, because some providers explicitly prohibit Tor Exit Nodes.
If Tor Exit is not an option, then Tor Relay is the solution. Tor relay is mostly allowed, and rarely blocked by providers.
With regards to downloading porn, it depends on protocol, since torrents might pose a problem due to copyright infringement. Again it depends on providers, but rarely we see a cheap provider allowing DMCA.
Donating bandwidth to non-profit projects is always a good idea, as long as such activity does not break the terms and conditions of providers.
are there any non-profits you can recommend that make it easy to do that?
Sure. Here is a guide for Tor Relay made by a moderator here:
https://lowendbox.com/blog/how-to-run-a-tor-node-on-your-vps/
Feel free to adjust the settings and naming of your server.
After a few hours of running the server you should be able to see it listed in Tor Metrics with a search: https://metrics.torproject.org/rs.html#search
ah, oops. my quote was bad and I wasn't clear when I posted. I was wondering if there are other non-profits, besides Tor, that made it easy to donate bandwidth. no worries if not, and thanks for the links, I think there's one or two vps I can donate to a tor relay for now
I have done a guide for hosting Tor exit/relay too, a slightly more detailed tutorial: https://mx.sb/host-your-own-tor-exit-relay-node
You are right, the denominator is huge. According to my vnstat statistics, it usually only costs around 10G on my vps's.
Supporting Tor is a good use case but I highly recommend against running an exit relay if you don't exactly know what you are doing. Most providers aren't happy with the abuse you will get and ban it either in their AUP or will shut down your VPS or even account as soon as you get an abuse report. Even those that allow it may have some rules when running it e.g. incognet or terrahost so just follow some guide online will most likely get you into troubles. And you could face some legal troubles even if it's legal where you life. You may still get raided by the police and your equipment can get sized for months or even years.
So please just run a normal relay or if you don't have that much bandwidth (less than 10TB) or want to be on the safe side just run a bridge.
There are official guides on how to setup everything and you should use those to get a recommended setup. https://community.torproject.org/relay/ / https://community.torproject.org/relay/setup/ (and make sure to also read https://community.torproject.org/relay/setup/post-install/)
I only skimmed the lowendbox and mx.sb tutorials but found problems with both. Both don't mention MyFamily which you have to set if you run multiple relays and the sb.mx one adds the non stable repositories while the LEB one doesn't add any repo which, depending on your distro, gives you an EOL Tor version.
It will damage reputation of IPs, Never use them. And it have high chances your IP can be used for account cracking or someother illegal stuff as they will rent your ip.
As long as I know, the fraud scores of my ips are still lower than 20 since last year according to https://scamalytics.com.
And in how many blacklist are your ips now in?
You forgot yggdrasil
None, or if there are any, they haven't impacted me at all. It's important to remember that IP reputations are dynamic and can fluctuate based on recent activities. The fact that my IPs have consistently shown a low fraud score over an extended period suggests that they have been used responsibly. This responsible usage likely reduces the chances of being placed on blacklists.
