Cozumel is nice and it is hard to beat it for diving. That area has some great Mayan ruins on the mainland. My favorites in that area are Coba and Uxmal. I know everyone goes gaga over Chichen Itza but it is not one of my favorites. If you like Mayan ruin sites and ever get a chance to go to Tikal in Guatemala or Bonampak just over the border in Mexico, those are my absolute favorites, with Palenque a close second.
Did you go party in Playa del Carmen where the ferry docks from Cozumel ?
I lived there when they had just finished paving the first street. It was really God's heaven on earth then. That was before it became the fastest growing tourist destination in Mexico.
