Interesting that why started the VPS XS offer for this very short period (1--2 weeks).

Inflate the customer number before end of the month.
Probably their statistics were too low and investor wouldn't be happy.

It is a possible reason. This promo ran simultaneous with their 1-year subscription 20% promo for existing customers. They paid the VPS rental price for an year and Contabo got fix customers for the next 12 mo without annoying fixed contracts or billing periods.

They got new CEO like a 2 months ago, he was behind IONOS/Strato before (both known for crazy good prices for first 6 months and then 10x price hike).
They still are owned by investors (private equity) and need to have constant customer number growth.
They disabled this offer on last day of the month.

It is 100% the reason, not just a possibility :)

  • Did contabo drop the price?

I think it's temporary. Contabo changes prices minutely and runs campaigns.

  • How much was VPS M before the hike?
10.49 is more than the double of VPS S.

This is the regular price. Currently, only VPS S is cheaper. (Regular price for VPS S is €5.99)

  • I don't know why they have such a bad reputation here. I had used their services for 1 year and it was quite high quality.
I had migrated to a dedicated server because I needed more CPU power.
Besides, if they do promotions on their storage servers I think I'll go back.
I don't know of any equivalent in terms of price for SSD storage. Do you know of other providers with similar plans?

  • no setup fee now?

  • Their Billing system Is broken? I selected 12 months still the price was not updated, was showing 4.50€ due today

The thing I found about Contabo is that quality varies. A lot. There are many people that have amazing experience with it, and there are also many people who have a terrible experience (bad node, bad performance, bad support, etc.)

When it comes to low end hosts, which they undeniably are one of, this is pretty much the norm. And that's fine, if you want cheap service you can have it. If it works then you save a great deal.

Ok ! Makes sense. To be honest, I haven't tested enough servers with them to get an overview. I had the impression that even with cpu steal given their generous allocation of CPU cores the performance was still good for the price. Butt I trust you.,

  • I have around 5 servers running there, never had issue only if you need help from support is non existence. Also there 4.50 deal is pretty sweat servers running fine.

  • I bought a VPS S SSD to try it for a month. The IO limit already exists, it is a very weak point, in 4K the 5+5 MB/s is very slow, I think that 40--50 Mbps read and 40--50 Mbps write might be acceptable...

I got a lucky IP, it is not blacklisted. Contabo got blacklisted subnets so I happy with my non-listed IP. I'm thinking on to create a self-hosted mailserver and this machine eligible for that with this CPU performance and RAM. Until CPU steal not appears, the only weak point is the SSD performance...
