BackupSheep (backup storage app / platform) - going out of business

edited September 2023 in General

Just got this email (not surprised after several recent changes in their policies, primarily due to AppSumo lifetime deals they sold):

Hi there,

We are writing to inform you of the upcoming closure of our application, effective Nov 1st 2023. After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations and shut down the application.

All customer data will be accessible for export until Nov 1st 2023, including files older than 90 days stored on BackupSheep storage.

In the forthcoming weeks, as a part of the closure process, BackupSheep is committed to giving back to the community. We will be open-sourcing our application and tools, allowing individuals and organizations to benefit from the technology that powered BackupSheep's services. The code and related tools will be published on GitHub, free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. This initiative ensures that, despite the end of BackupSheep’s operational journey, its technological innovations will continue to serve and contribute to the tech community and the broader public. Users and developers are encouraged to stay tuned for further announcements regarding the release of BackupSheep’s open-source tools on GitHub.

BackupSheep, in business since 2017, initially had no intention of offering Lifetime Deals (LTD). AppSumo, a third-party company, proposed an LTD, from which BackupSheep received a mere 30% of the generated revenue. The structure of this deal primarily benefited AppSumo. Misleading marketing presented BackupSheep as offering lifetime storage, not as a backup tool, attracting an unintended and diverse user base.

This new crowd of users didn’t align with BackupSheep's original target audience. Many resold their LTD codes on platforms like Facebook groups, leading to a rise in system abuse by a small portion of these new users. This exploitation made it difficult to maintain the platform’s sustainability, affecting all users and potentially harming BackupSheep’s long-term stability, reputation and growth.

BackupSheep will not be continuing its services under any other name or domain, and there are no plans to partner with other companies in the future. This closure is final.

Yeah...I understand that AppSumo (and similar) lifetime deals are weighed heavily in favor of AppSumo. But, as a businessperson, don't these people (developers, SaaS companies, etc) think about the worst case scenarios when agreeing to sell their stuff this way? If you offer X as part of a product (where X=cloud storage that the developer has to pay for every month, or whatever), wouldn't you assume you'd need to price the LTD in a way that doesn't put you in the hole every month?

I know some companies view LTD as a marketing/advertising expense to get customers, but that only works when you aren't on the hook to provide a costly resource to your customers every month, even when they are no longer paying you.

Kind of sad to see BackupSheep go away. Their product is actually perfect for many use cases. If they could have just sold the software as part of the LTD (without the included cloud storage), it could actually have been sustainable for them.

The issue wasn't the lifetime deal, it was the assholes that resold and abused it. SMH

I think you meant something more like, "subscription model, ruining apps since the 2010's..."

    Ho no... :'(

the EU should subsidize a failing business, so it can keep doing what doesn't work. It's the key to efficiency and innovation.

    Ping to @EU

  • I came here to say the domain name now has an error, and still no opensource announcement :(

  • Sheep got a ticket to a slaughter house.

  • yeah, I'm not counting on the open source thing. Which is why I built my own backup solution when they closed up.
