Both my NYC VPS are up!
The last email I have got from VirMach is on Sep 1st and my VM is still down.
Do you consider this as a professional and timely updates?
I consider it about par for the low-end. You've got a status page that is updated SIGNIFICANTLY more recently than that email, and I truly don't need 10 emails detailing every step of the way. My host's main provider just deadpooled, I know there's going to be chaos and outages.
Let me flip that back to you: If you don't consider this level of service professional enough for your use, why are you still with them? It's not like their support level has gotten worse over time, you've been here for years and virmach's support isn't some new situation, I think most of us still using it are well aware of what to expect.
The VM service renewal is already cancelled and I expect VM to work through service end date and a fair credit for the days when VM is down.
For example - say, if the VM is down for 45 days then an extension for end date for 45 days is the least expected from the provider.
Based on Virmach's past style, migrating to a new provider may be a lengthy process.
ok, and? Request that, then, if it doesn't get adjusted once everything is actually up again? I've had my service extended by a free month on more than one occasion when I've had extended downtimes, but if you're upset they don't have someone updating your due date daily while they're in the middle of disaster recovery from a deadpool, I think you're being absolutely ridiculous on your expectations from any lowend host. Several services are still down, I'll sort out the rest once that's done. I have yet to be unsatisfied with the resolution of anything I've had with virmach, though I guess I may have lower expectations if we're talking about $3-$5/yr unsustainable services.
But again, I question why you were still here, you clearly renewed your service last time it was due, and the virmach situation has not gotten worse in the last year or so. Ticket response times have actually improved some, the network status page updates are a HUGE improvement over "nag virmach on the let thread" that was standard before he left LET. If this response isn't professional enough for you yet, why have you not migrated away well before now? You certainly should've known the type of response to expect in this situation, you were around for when virmach left colocrossing and for when preorders took FOREVER. I'm just curious at this point what actually WAS the final straw for you to cancel. Is it just one of those $3/yr servers that you pay just so you can whine about it? Deal too cheap to pass up so you're in a masochistic relationship with it that you're finally ending?
well my VPS is $18 per year and
I have much better support with InceptionHosting that is cheaper than this
and as I have mentioned above, I have already requested to cancel my VPS service at the end of current billing period.
will i buy new virmach promo? no
will i renew and keep my existing BF special? yes
why still renew after late ticket replies? price-performance ratio.
other remarks? they migrated my vps to Ryzen (think last year?) and i experience the 'free' improvements.
moving forward? probably migrate public facing websites away from vps if incident happen again but not now to this IP incident because not their fault TBH
Let's try this. Here is a random sample of nodes that I have VMs on. The number of VMs per node in parentheses if more than one. Can we tell which ones are fully operational and if not, why not? And vice versa.
Here is another list. Same question:
I will tell you there are multiple systems from above two lists that are fully functional. There are also some that are not functional, or at least not fully functional. The symptoms of these are one of:
Note, all systems in the two lists above were fully functional and operational on or before September 3, 2023. No noteworthy changes have been made to the systems leading up to September 3 other than the reconfigure net button which has worked on some systems. All systems but three are Debian 12.
The answer is, all VMs on the first list are non-functional. All VMs on the second are fully functional and on new post-DediPath addresses if applicable. And yes, there is a node that has one up and two down VMs. And there are two "down, node locked" VMs which don't even have an associated node making a total of 10 down. If you could tell all that from the status page Virmach should hire you immediately. Maybe should anyway? :-) Your mileage may vary, this is just one customer's perspective.
I agree with your comments.
Do you think any provider can offer such VPS for $15 per year
When will they finish? I have one doplet with them
Well, Seattle is currently listed as an outage, so right off the bat, 3 of those aren't going to work. Likewise, San Jose is listed as an outage, so you can exclude that as well. That brings us down to NYC in the first list, a partial outage waiting on IPs to be fully functional, which absolutely tracks with the posted status and your experience of 6 functional and 4 down across a mix of NYC nodes. No, it doesn't list every single node and whether it's up or down at a glance, but it has a relatively up-to-date list of issues with locations, including whether it's a partial or full outage. That's really all the info I need to know if I need to make a ticket, or if I just need to wait for another status update.
Could it be improved? Absolutely, but personally I feel like that's an acceptable response for a lowend provider. I've got 14 services here with 5 currently down, and the ones that are all down are listed among the "outage" or "partial outage" locations, which tells me they're aware there's still an issue. These are more timely updates than they gave in years past, and in my experience, their customer service has been improving. I expect that I'll have 1-2 VMs with issues once everything is supposedly up and working, that's not uncommon when virmach has to migrate services or restore from backup, but I also expect that I'll get them resolved with relatively minor hassle after a bit, as usual.
Definitely not... not if they want to remain a provider
After reading the thread title I remembered I had an idle VPS with Virmach then I logged to check it and..
Operation Timed Out After 90000 Milliseconds With 0 Bytes ReceivedI guess I'm unlucky
Guys, I've been shifted to LAX node. I see my VPS with a new IP and showing "ONLINE".
However, I can't connect to the IP at all (SSH, HTTP, all fail). Neither to the VNC IP. Web VNC fails with the given password. (I used root as the username; also tried with a blank user)
The Rescue mode connects, but I don't see any of my files.
Am I the only one with such a problem? Or do I have a club?
UPDATE: Ok weird. After my post here, the SSH starts miraculously responding. I can connect now. Thanks!
Anyone's VM in NYC and it says "The node is currently locked" for a few days now?
I know I've had some that were once in the Buffalo location that have been locked for months now if that helps. :-) There is apparently a lot going on in various locations, much of which I believe is related to having been hosted by DediPath. This is the new normal.
ChatGPT please write a WHMCS plugin that auto provisions servers after between 1 minute and 1 year, random
Make the client interface look like SolusVM, but instead of connecting it to a backend, just print random errors, on random locations
