What would happen if all 8 thousand datacenters shut down

What you think would happen if all the data centers were to shut down? I mean like a giant cyber attact on all of them rendering them offline. Would you be ok or not....

Probably not, but what about self hosted servers?

    LowEndTalk would be offline too

If every data centre on the planet went offline?
    We'd all be pretty fucked.

I don't see this happening unless the world either loses all it's electrical power. A cyberattack could wipe out many but not all data centers. My rationale for this is that different hardware will likely run different software (packages) or heck even Windows if someone is crazy enough (likely) to have that doing some kind of routing for their specific needs.

But also I'm curious to the question - why would it matter if all data centers went down? It's not like our data is on all data centers so we'd likely be affected if just a few major data centers went down. What if Google DNS went down (just 2 ips) and boom - 'no internet' for many.

Facebook shown that even the "best" cannot handle the power of BGP - so its possible we'll see it some day.

I dont even think that need to shut down 8k dc. I think enough will be few big players of magistral network channels to shutdown, and whole internet in the world will off for some period of time, like a days. Or something like that. But if you talking about wiping data, i'm vote for such thing. Because if data will be wiped, it's a new start for everyone to try their best prepare correct rules with owning data individually, not shared or uploaded to network. Like some kind of hash or something.

It would matter. As example, I live in a small EU country. Our national health systems don't depend from "few major" datacenters and neither yours most likely.
The consequences would be catastrophic. Local hospitals, airports, civil protection services, gov services, banking services... everything would go down.

you can always blame the virus.
and he can help sending fax

    @nocloud

  • Well.. I would have to put my home machine to idle

  • nothing would happen, all data centers in the world contain servers that only idle - all the critical infrastructure is just imagined, its only in your head. we live in a simulation.

  • Where did you find that number? (8K DCs)

I can only think of the biggest solar flare that could take out power grid everywhere in the world. It could take months or even years to restore the malfunction transformer all in the grid. Any country should have emergency plan by stockpile transformer

As soon as you go into any datacenter the simulation just quits and restarts since you’ve figured the lie out.

    Though with your memory reset.

  • As VPS customer? nothing since everything will just paused. Just waiting for stuff to resume, then restore backup in case we have to.

Provider who ddn't physically manage the server probably will be in similar situation.

But DC ops, neteng, whoever who work on the site.
Almost all of them gonna experience hell for sure. Imagine all the tickets that automatically generated.

  • i dont care as long as pornhub is still up.

but there will be a lot of new content after wiping all data, and much better content. All content will be new. No more videos that you must to skip because you watched them before. No more suffer from choosing a video that you haven't watched before.
