More accurately, a single support representative did it.

"We strive to provide best-in-class support for our customers. The technique you described would be against our policy," a Microsoft spokesperson told BleepingComputer.

"We are investigating this occurrence and will take appropriate steps to ensure proper procedures are followed regarding customer support for our products and services."

Most likely the agent betted that the average user requesting support assistance would not notice or care as long as it worked, and they could resolve peoples problems effectively.

Maybe Microsoft does have a secret regime where they will crack your install on demand, however I would not treat the actions of a single support representative as the views, policies or endorsements of Microsoft as a whole.

That’s funny. It hears like a Cloudflare staff unplugged the power cable of the backbone node back to 3 yrs ago.

In recent years it was estimated that in OS market, Windows would lose the competition to MacOS or some GNU/Linux distro even. Now that they have a solid grasp on LLMs, the tides would turn in their favor.

So I wouldn't imagine they'd be tolerating piracy. Even pushing a subscription-based plan is on the table cause they would have a monopoly.

Too much people have used M$ and their products all their lives, too much games on PC were always M$ only. So much so, that PC Gaming is now synonymous to Microsoft Windows.

All students (me included) were introduced to MS ecosystem ages ago, and most if not all corporations and public workplaces, use Microsoft Windows only.

Its impossible to exit the ecosystem when so many software is Windows only. You know its bad when people prefer cracked and modded systems over linux distros.

Linux will always OS exclusive to neckbeards in home/consumer usage, but in server space its luckily de-facto choice for any professionals.

Microsoft needs to fuck up really badly for it to lose monopoly. Something like NSA level mass surveilance or corporate bullshit that they would intentionally break computer hardware over time to drive PC market, would be enough to make people change over to alternative OS.

MSFT realized that they should just bundle a Linux distro into Windows. Costs them nothing.

Heck, Windows 10 even has X-windows built in...
