Free domains after freenom's death?

Hey all,

I was following this tutorial: https://lowendspirit.com/discussion/1564/personal-proxy-on-ipv6-nat-ipv4-server

and it asks for a domain which has to point to cloudflare. I got the VPN working using a subdomain from afraid.org however it didn't work. I'm able to connect to the VPN on the non-censored network, but not on the censored one. VPNs on Azure also seems to work fine for some reason, which leads me to believe they have a whitelist blocking system. I tried OVH in the past but it didn't work.

Is there a way I could get a domain for this? The tutorial states that the domain will point to cloudflare's servers, which I have checked are accessible, hence concealing the connection to my server's ip.

thanks.

  • Don't.
Just buy a domain and reduce inefficiency and headaches for future

In the first place, there is no need to find Freenom, which cancels at will, in a state where cheap domains are widely available these days.

And uh.... if you're looking for a free domain other than EU.org mentioned in the thread, see below.
    https://www.getfreedomain.name/

If you absolutely need a top-level domain, it would be a good idea to find a deal that allows you to register a domain for free for one year.

For the most recent deals I've seen, see the thread below.

The numeric xyz ones seem to be the best idea, since this is for personal use only and I don't really care about the the domain. Namecheap seems to be the best provider, N6 domains for 0.85c per year.

On a different note, why are domains based on a subscription system? And if they are a subscription, how do the people sell/auction their domains here? Does the buyer have to pay the agreed amount + renewal every year? Is there no such things as owning a domain?

  • It will better if you buy a cheap TLD than a free domain.

    https://tldes.com/cheapest-domains
Here you can easily compare domain price.

pp.ua is free if you're fine with your real information showing up in whois.

You do know how DNS resolution works right? Even if you have your own TLD someone out there is footing the bill for the root nameserver. I suppose you can use one of those niche crypto TLDs that only works when you're using their DNS (and doesn't work with Cloudflare, Let's Encrypt etc)

I do know how DNS works, was just curious, especially with all the marketing around "owning" your own domain by many companies.

In a sense, it'd be more appropriate to say that we rent a domain name than that we own a domain name, but at the same time, own isn't entirely incorrect, because as long as we pay the yearly fee in a timely manner, we can keep the domain name (i.e., no one else can take the domain name from us, modulo special/exceptional circumstances)

It's a bit like owning a property but needing to pay a tax for the property every year

Get a free 3rd level domain at https://freedns.afraid.org/
in hundreds of zones to choose, some are really short (even 1-letter).

For a personal use I find it relaxing to not have to care about renewals whatsoever. If my specific subdomain stops working, I switch to a different one (assuming the site itself still works, but it's operating for literally decades by now).

But still that's only for technical domains like a proxy, for testing, DynDNS, or such. If you publish a website that other people will find in search engines, read, bookmark and share, better get a proper domain registered in your name, even if in a weird zone like .xyz or .ovh. Everyone can afford at least one. From then on you can put your various other projects as subdomains of that -- do not need to register any more.

pp.ua is great if you really don't have the money to buy just an ordinary domain.
Make a secondary phone number that you never really use (Maybe Google Voice will work IDK), then activate your domain with it.

    Thanks, missed that. But if

@DentFuse said: they have a whitelist blocking system

Then wouldn't trying to use your own arbitrary domain not work either?

Maybe try with a few other afraid.org domains, in zones that are not weird or uncommon, even if the entire thing is longer.

I purchased a .xyz domain, the 80cents were worth the relief. The main purpose for wanting a TLD was to have control over the nameserver to route the traffic through Cloudflare. This way the blocking software would see a connection to cloudflare's ip instead of my server. Did that, generated a new certificate, setup full TLS on cloudflare, but now apparently now they are blocking on the basis of the URL being unrated.

Trying to find a workaround on that now.

afraid.org supports NS type records too.

    Get a numeric .xyz domain for 1$ register, 1$ renewal. E.g. 737564.xyz

1.111B Class .xyz Domains. The 1.111B Class is made up of all 6-digit, 7-digit, 8-digit, and 9-digit numeric .xyz domains between 000000.xyz – 999999999.xyz.

The default price for 1.111B Class .xyz domains is $0.99 per year to create, renew, and transfer, including ICANN fees. Transfers will automatically add 1 year to your domain’s expiry date, and additional years can be added at checkout.

Just so you know - EU.ORG domains require manual approval. The waiting time ranges from several weeks to several months.

How well does it work? Thought about getting one. Is gen.xyz the only registrar that gives out 1$ numeric xyz domains or is there some more reputable one like Namecheap, too?

Edit: namecheap also offers this along with free whois protection :)

Yup, namecheap is cheaper and provides privacy protection with the domain. Pretty happy with the purchase so far.

It's probably just a temporary technical issue from Freenom side.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Because of technical issues the Freenom application for new registrations is temporarily out-of-order.
Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience. We are working on a solution and hope to resume operations shortly.
    Thank you for your understanding.

I have two free '.tk' from them with own name servers (registered many years ago). And this exist two works fine for me.
