A reliable dedicated server provider for vpn, unmetred 1Gb/s

Hi guys,

I need a bunch of dedicated servers for hosting vpn with the following specs:

  • unlimited 1Gb/s connection
  • CPU benchmark > 8k
  • at least 16GB of RAM
  • the price is under 40-50usd

I need to order 20-30 servers at once.
Please suggest something, as Hetzner is kicking me out :)

  • Why is hetzner kicking you out?

I'm not sure, they haven't explained. There is no any obvious violation on my side. My guess is that our cooperation isn't profitable for them now because energy price is rising up

Could you specify what kind of VPN as well? As it may be important.
For example, if you need a VPN between locations, or a secure way to access your stuff online, I don't think anyone would kick you.
If you need it for bypass limitations such as Turkmenistan bans or Netflix streaming stuff, then maybe that's why Hetzner is kicking you out.

  • Some of users can definitely use it to bypass limitations. However, it was okay for Hetzner for a very long time. As far as I know it is not illegal. Most likely they are trying to cut the costs, and of course, vpn is the best option to kick out at first. But as I mentioned, I can't say for sure. For now, I just need to find a good alternative...

  • Hmmm, no email explanation from them on what causes your servers to be locked? Since they send right away before locking. Since me and my other friend faced this before when hosting a VPN on Hetzner, can you share the email they provide you for the reason? And what VPN technology are you using, OpenVPN, WireGuard, etc. Etc.

They do not like public vpn's or tor exit nodes.
Hetzner is a bunch of pussies that act by their imaginary rules - not the law.

  • What location are you looking for?
I would recommend what providers like Mullvad(https://mullvad.net/en/servers) or IVPN(https://www.ivpn.net/status/) are using.
All providers they use are listed and are obviously suitable for public vpn hosting.

What was the highest bandwidth you used on any server? Some time last year they had a cull of anyone with servers regularly going over 250TB per month. It'd be interesting to know if that's why you were kicked or if the bar has been lowered since then.

They, actually, haven't locked. They gave some time to move out...

    !!!MESSAGE THEIR SUPPORT FIRST!!!

Used them, and they are pretty nice and stable

Edit: only 50 TB BW, but with that quantity I'm sure you could figure something out with them

No, I don't think it is because of bandwidth. My servers typically transfer 150tb/mo, and is was the same for years

  • I need empty Ubuntu 20 servers, no need for any pre-installed software.

Location is EU or close to it

A lot of commercial VPNs use oneprovider. If you get one of theirs in Europe it will probably be France at online.net

Is online.net the same as scaleway.com? I had some experience with them a couple of years ago, their servers were not stable. They were experiencing network issues at least once a month. And support was terrible :(

yes, online.net is scaleway. if you need good support, I would stay away from oneprovider then

we got you covered as part of our minidedi devlabs effort:
    https://pulsedmedia.com/minidedi-dedicated-servers-finland.php

the 7700t is very close to your spec: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-7700T+@+2.90GHz&id=2951
    7500t is a bit short: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-7500T+@+2.70GHz&id=2917

We will be adding new batch regardless by summer, and since you need this many we can custom built just for you a setup of say 24? Local supplier should have that many still available of the 7700t model. We build these in batches of 8.
Would take approximately 3 weeks to do that but allow upto 6 weeks.

You would be eligible for discounts too: https://pulsedmedia.com/resellers.php

We have a bunch of VPN provider customers, so nothing new in that regard. Just take care of abuse cases on your behalf and you'll be just fine. Not sure how many, but the oldest one has been with us for roughly a decade now.

BANDWIDTH: You say Unlimited 1Gbps, but do you mean 1Gbps burstable and actual usage is more like 100Mbps 95th or actually do 1Gbps 95th %?
If latter case then we need to look at the pricing more carefully, but if your usage is more like average 200mbps per node 95th then just grab the readily available ones

As for Hetzner kicking out, there's been a IT hosting professional joke running that Hetzner is fine as long as you don't use it, but even the lightest use and they will kick you out :D

Not sure if that's true, but sometimes it looks like that, they have so many rules on what you can do with your nodes with them.

I've checked my stats more carefully. Probably, you are right with your guess. Most of my servers transfer > 9tb a day (rx + tx).

Thats about 100 MB/s constant, or 0.83 Gbps

No, I don't think it is because of bandwidth. My servers typically transfer 150tb/mo, and is was the same for years

500Mbps per VPS, 20 servers = around 10Gbps constant usage.
The traffic price from the cheap provider is 1k EUR/10Gbps, 2k euros from the premium one.

    Your budget is 50 USD/VPS 20 VPS x 50 USD = 1k USD.
Energy fees, hardware fees, other fees, etc.

There is an answer to why Hetzner is kicking you out. Unprofitable.
Very good point to drop network equipment loads.

That was my initial guess. I believe, it used to be profitable, but nowadays everything got more expensive... I still can't figure out why they would not just raise the prices, instead of kicking me out. Considering that I pay for some dedicated servers much less than 50usd

yeap, this is the reason. way too much BW per node used. they were making quite a bit of loss on each of them.

I actually transfer 1Gbps 95th%. What would be the price then?

Well, this needs to be custom setup:

    • Core i7-7700t
    • 16GB DDR4
    • Cheapest SSD/NVMe possible
    • Full Fat 1Gbps Dedicated
    • Have to order in 8 node sets (this is the standard batch size)
    • 765,35€ Per Month, paid quarterly upfront

That is 10Gbps reserved for each set of 8 units, so sans error correction you can actually do that full 1Gbps. Most providers are not geared up to provide such bandwidth levels at a quantity on per rack basis. So reverse contention ratio to ensure you get that bandwidth, most switches lack the buffer to utilize 100% of the link from multiple sources at once, so this way no TOR switch buffer is required and buffering is on the edge router which have massive buffers.

That's about ~95,69€/Node, and actual dedicated bandwidth.

You would eligible for 5% discount: https://pulsedmedia.com/resellers.php so final number is 90,91€/Node/Month - at 28 nodes you would get 10% discount for 86,12€/Node/Month

Prepayment annually (so we are safe to increase transit capacity since these are 1-5 year contracts) we can do additional 5% discount.
