Colocating in Hetzner Finland Datacenter? Let's Discuss! :)

PulsedMediaPulsedMedia Member, Patron Provider

Wonder if there are providers here colocating at Hetzner's Finnish datacenter?
How have you liked it, and how does stuff actually work there?

We operate from Finland, but being frugal don't want to rent a rack just to check things out there to satisfy our curiosity :)

Tho, as we grow we might need to temporarily rent half a rack or couple racks from Hetzner to house some stuff, but bringing our network (100G DWDM) etc. kinda is not worth the cost for what we might need temporary housing for yet our bandwidth needs exceed what's sensible to pay directly to hetzner, but if there's another provider here colocating already there we might have some opportunity to cooperate for mutual benefit :)

Not really, we do use some of the same providers and almost bought space in the same building they are to build our 2nd DC. Deal was very very close. We would have been literally next-door neighbors, sharing the same building. They are on the ground level, and we would have built ours on 2nd level and have offices on level 1½ (funky layout, our ground level was ~quarter of a level higher than rest of the building)

The owner to best of my knowledge is russian origin, and they have been long in business. We have some customers who are also their customers.

They have been on the same building for like a decade.

The space we were looking for has been turned into shared office spaces now, and we did finally agree to the price but in the few weeks between counter offer and our acceptance of the offer the space was sold.

Ultimately, it was a blessing in disguise for oh so many reasons we have learned looking into places. We settled upon a very small rental place, but by volume quite large which is way more cost-effective ultimately once built out. Give it a year or two for production to start there.

Just curious, do you guys offer/plan to offer colo?
Do you have any anti ddos in your bandwidth mix(or plan to)?

We have no plans to go into tech real estate business right now, at earliest around say 5-6 years if we buy a place after filling enough of this 2nd DC, which is already dedicated and committed 100%. Just a few thousand hours of work to go, and a few M of investment when done.

Then again, similar pattern (more or less copy pasta) DCs 3/4 space already designated, and we have that space already ... all 3 sharing almost exactly the same dimensions. So might be 10+ years as we fill all 3 of these ... :)

Let's just say these plans are on the level where we were legitimately looking at 60x 100GbE switches yesterday as an very good contender on one of the network aggregation layers. For just one of the 3 spaces.

After that we have made no plans as of yet.

DDOS there already is levels of protection, as these are considered part of operational security we will not discuss them further.

How about you start with something simple? Like creating real control panel for you seedboxs. it's almost 2025 you know..

If you want certain features you are free to contribute.

We will bring also the GUI (or control panel like you call it) to github soon. Well it is, but not the latest iteration, will update the code soon to latest code. Perhaps even include the server side autoupdating code if not just changing how the server side is being updated :) Regardless, the newest version has minimal changes so you can use those already as starting point.

    https://github.com/MagnaCapax/PMSS

and here is the "control panel": https://github.com/MagnaCapax/PMSS/tree/main/etc/skel/www

    Interesting here are index.php, welcome.php, stats.php, info.php
Index is basicly just the remote live updating code, welcome.php is where you want to add buttons and controls, info.php is basicly wrapper for the stats.php
EDIT index.php actually loads the update code from our servers, along with tabs etc. i had forgotten this that the updating code is also dynamicly updated. Might need to make a bit more changes to that to make it easier to contribute to that specific section.

These files are updated from our servers on each login/load of index.php, so whatever our servers have will keep it updated. which brings me to i need to make a quick commit to stop that behavior if .updateIgnore file is present or so, will document in code.

If you want fundamental changes, make your case why, what and how for discussion. It has to be beneficial for every single user, even those with 13years of legacy. also backwards compatible, and not a single regression is allowed, and breaking old users is a absolute no no.

If you can do this, we will welcome your contribution. You might even get rewards / bounties for your contributions like so many others.

With github.dev you can open the files in your browser and submit pull requests straight from the browser IDE quickly and easily without installing anything, say if you find a typo or misleading text, very quick to fix.

We are planning to have a general purpose reward program over time, but nothing definitive yet.

Our company has game shared hosting hardware within Hetzner Germany Colocation. We are currently in the process of leaving and moving. Due to rising power costs and terrible service that hetzner provides.
Remote hands pricing is deadly expensive, BGP announcements are $200+/month per prefix, network is mediocre, and more.

If you’re looking to colocate with hetzner, it’s probably better to look elsewhere.

wow, i was just looking at the pricing and that's not what i got for remote hands :O
Remote hands was imho cheap, what 65€ per hour?

Yea 200€+ for BGP tho is a bit steep.

Electricity is acceptable here in Finland too for having UPS + Genies, only 0.22€/KWh.

In what terms is the service terrible?

Network; The thing that is the cost killer indeed. We would have to bring our own network there, 100G DWDM is not exactly cheap and if needs are max 3 racks it's not worth it for that alone.

Infact, our needs are so low that we would need to partner up with someone who is interested in getting some transit capacity from us, or otherwise share the bringing the network there costs (ie. PTP Backhaul to our current location). People say our network is not just better but wildly better, and our costs are def lower than hetzner's too in that regard.

Those needs may grow tho, since our next DC is planned for something very specific, and we need some more general purpose space. I could ask a friend where it would be cheap to bring our network, but his DC is built to the exactly other end of the spectrum. Think 1000€ a month per cabinet level of operations.

Their colocation is cheap and Power is still acceptable for that location from what you see now.

There are DCs with higher power prices.

But wow. 200 announcement fee? Per Prefix?
There is always one thing that jacks up your invoices lol

"Cheap pricing" will be difficult in Germany, they got absolutely rocked by an autistic teen that told em to disable nuclear power plants - and they did.
