Google is reportedly testing an alternate home page with ChatGPT-style Q&A prompts

We know Google is currently freaking out about AI chatbot ChatGPT, but a report from CNBC offers new details about how the search giant is apparently marshaling its response.

According to CNBC, Googlers are currently testing an AI chatbot of their own called “Apprentice Bard,” which offers responses to questions posed using natural language just like ChatGPT. Bard is built using Google’s LaMDA technology, which is itself similar to the GPT-series of AI language models that ChatGPT itself relies on.

I mean they damn well better be. I agree completely with their perspective that this is the end of their time as the leading search engine if they don’t get on board with this new iteration, because Bing sure is on it from the looks of it.

ChatGPT is risky business for search engines, especially when they're free to public. Not now ofcourse but it's a start.

    • People start using AI to lookup for -average- information, with a twist of human created censorship filters, blocking specific/unpopular opinion
    • Content creators start suing AI companies because their work was scraped/reproduced
    • The AI can no longer get new datasets to feed data from, it becomes a feedback loop, quality/authenticity starts declining, so is the traffic
    • Normal people cease AI use, and start switching to self-hosted microcommunities for accurate/authentic information
    • People then realize that AI is just glorified if/else statement chatbot that constantly feeds on data. Data stops, AI dies.

  • Google makes most of their money from ad searches. Unless they're able to sneak in an ad, it's not profitable. With a Google search you're also able to see the source of the information as well which should be important. The best use case is for those AI assistance support that you see on a lot of websites at the bottom right these days or something like Siri / Cortana / Google Assistant. It'll be interesting if Microsoft releases Clippy powered by ChatGPT.

If anything for me, as of right now, chatgpt is best for generating complex sql queries. Put your tables and explain what do you want. No search engine can do that.

  • It would be a big plus if google search could differ between an input that wants a source or an input that could be satisfied by a chatGPT like awnser. For example "How do I setup postfix for smtp relay" would just give me a chatGPT like config output. Meanwhile "Postfix" just goes to the google search showing me websites.
