EU Provider similar to Linode?

Does anyone know of a EU provider similar to Linode. I current have a Linode 512 in the UK, but I don't trust it being owned by a US company, since my VPS would have to follow "US laws".

It needs to be Xen and a stable provider.

  • What do you mean by "Similar to Linode" in terms of specifications or..?

  • If by "similar to linode" you mean non-low end prices then I can recommend bytemark hosting www.bytemark.co.uk/hosting/virtual_machines. KVM based with specs/prices broadly similar to Linode, with a similar pattern of occasional free upgrades.

I've had a VM with them for over 5 years and admined several more. Only one unscheduled downtime worth mentioning in all that time. Performance always good, although I don't push it that hard.

  • uk2 maybe?

  • or even webfusion

  • Gandi.net - i have a 256MB RAM VPS for 12Euro/month (+ VAT if you need to pay VAT). I have it for many years and am happy with the stability.

One of the most trusted EU VPS company over those years is EuroVPS (or their budget line ecovps.com -> what a cool site) from Netherland. They are considered as premium host, many positive reviews and they know what they are doing for sure... only downfall in your case could be their virtualization (yes, I know that you want Xen vps and they use virtuozzo).
From LEB I would suggest XenVZ (their Rapidswitch location have like one short downtime per year/average of my 4 years of using their service) and same as poster before Edis (their austrian location).

what's the problem with that? Last time i checked US were a great country to live in.

  • @marrco

Even so, why should another country have to follow US rules?

  • @vmport what specific rule you're referring to?

I have no problem having my vps in EU or in the US so i'm curious to know why some guys so eager to avoid the "US laws".

  • I don't which specific rule the OP is talking about but there are major differences for instance with a NL based company compared to US.

I guess its down to his own personal preference, who are we to argue :)

uhh, Santorum - don't talk like that :-3

Are you sure that the laws a company needs to follow don't depend on the country the server is located in? For example porn is legal here but i can't just rent a server in Iran and use it to distribute porn, the datacenter people would probably get hanged for it.

Yes, you have to consider two levels. The US company has to follow US law and UK law in this case. Criminal law is bound to the borders of the state (exceptions exist). Accounting/taxation regulations are, however, valid for the corporation where it has its main seat or alike.

    Cough SOPA.

Your country's government knows nothing of how the internet works, while the EU is trying to keep the internet open, your government aims for the opposite.

@liam said: The thing is ever since the 1940's the british have been heavily indebted to the americans due to WW2. Theres a sense of everything they tell us to do we have to do (Iraq/Afghanistan/Libya for example).

I think the republican candidates are farcical. No one even capable of challenging Obama let alone challenging him.

I thought the republicans were religious nut cases, and people who vote for them hate gay people, abortion etc.

  • @liam said: Yup I think that's right. Most of their voters hate obama because he's black and a 'muslim' (hes actually christian).

I heard most of them think that Obama was born in another country.

I think separation of religion and the state is a good thing and needed, which is why I want the UK to get rid of the queen.

  • @liam said: Yeah. I think we should allow the queen to remain but when she's dead abolish the 'royal' family.

I can make sense of that, theres no point to having a monarchy, and why should power (although little) be inherited, especially when you have it due to your family being "top gang" hundreds of years ago.

Well, 1Gbit Port. Solid Company (eg I know linode wont be disappearing in the next 1 year). Awesome support.

And not a LEB Provider. I host private, valuable and a lot of data on my personal VPS.

To be fair the EU also fails at internet politics

I want a host that speaks English, let alone has an English site.

  • I still haven't decided who to switch too.

Clicking on the US flag in the top right corner might do the trick ;-)

Thats weird, I never thought American was a language :p

  • Anyway, I've decided http://www.leaseweb.com/en/cloud-hosting/express-cloud is probably the best.
