I hope nothing happened to the comfortable socks as it would be bad to only have uncomfortable sock in the future.

I am still here! Had just tabbed over to reddit to browse for a bit

See, I did see that I might be still getting the headphones, which would be cool -- but like 4 days ago, and for most of the last month, I was two spots higher, and I realized how quickly the 100-200 posts spots could be taken over!

  • I'm also trying to figure out how to backup a local server to a VPS...borg backup? straight rsync? I would prefer something that is encrypted before copying it to the VPS, but debating if I should just fork out money for something like B2...

You could use mcrypt or zip with a password before sending the backup via rsync that would be easy and fast. If you have p7zip on the local server then I can post up a simple script for you to do it with.

  • Sorry for these delays in answering you my internet keeps going down. Seven times in the last hour it has dropped the connection.

Is that the best way to use a VPS as offsite storage? I don't have p7zip but I can probably whip something up to zip my files and make a cron job to do the rsync.

It is a Linux server, yes. If so there are many way to do a backup, but the best way would probably depend on what you were backing up. If there are no running sql data bases then rsync'ing the directories that you want to backup into a temp directory and then zip'ing the temp directory with a password and rsync'ing the zip file to the backup VPS is fast and simple.

Yeah it's just my local Unraid box. I want to backup the nextcloud directory primarily. I have all my appdata already backed up with a plugin into zip files so I'll probably add those, too

I really appreciate it! I enjoy dabbling with all kinds of tech stuff and half the time, I end up learning by needing to fix what I broke, lol. Figured before I convince my wife to start using Nextcloud, I should have some sort of redundancy/backup in place. And finding another use for one of these VPS is never a bad thing!

Finding a use for an idling VPS is always a good thing. Then you can buy more and support our wonderful low end providers. Also not pissing off the wife because you lost her backups goes a long way too.

  • What are other uses for an idle VPS?
