Сontabo (Cloud VPS S - $8.49) - Very slow bandwidth speed <111KB/s >

Hi!
Can you evaluate the performance of this plan and the company as a whole.

wget --passive-ftp -c -O /dev/null https://speed.hetzner.de/100MB.bin /dev/null 1%[ ] 1.48M 111KB/s eta 14m 50s^

My letter to the support service about the existing problem with the bandwidth speed, received the following "qualified" response.

Quote:

Dear Victor,
Thanks for reaching out to Contabo customer support.
Please run the following commands under SSH:
wget -O speedtest-cli https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sivel/speedtest-cli/master/speedtest.py && chmod +x speedtest-cli && ./speedtest-cli
You can find a tutorial about how to do this on the following website. There you can find a step-by-step instruction about the steps you need to perform:
https://www.linuxwebzone.com/how-to-run-speedtest-on-vps-server/

The results please send us as a .txt file.

Best regards,

Uh, standard answer, the guy is clueless of routing.
The Route/Link towards Hetzner looks congested as fuck.

If the issue persists, escalate the ticket.

At least you have rather good connection to Shanghai and Los Angeles.

Do one thing, install mtr-tiny or whatever it's called in Centos. Do traceroute, mtr -zbwrc 30 speed.hetzner.de than copy the output here, so we can all see where that traffic is so choked to death.

  • Well, that's weird, the network path is clean and short, no packet loss, etc...

Have no ideas, try that wget again some time later...

Maybe some other Contabo user can check on their VPS...

Who knows. Maybe some Contabo engineer was on family holidays in China and configured home router there to relay traffic for some reason.
At this point - I expect the unexpected from Contabo.

Here is the mail from Contabo. Not sure how they calculate 10 days, but I was rate limited within 3 days.

Being in the position of an infrastructure and hosting provider, it is our obligation to ensure a fair allocation of the available bandwidth amongst and in favour of all Contabo customers likewise. To fulfill this requirement, various shaping mechanisms have been implemented, which regulate such fair distribution of bandwidth at runtime.

While this aforementioned instrument already contributes essentially towards our aim to guarantee a fair bandwidth allocation, we found that it may not suffice in every situation and that it requires an additional tool to regulate extraordinary bandwidth consumption which comes into effect, when such is gauged.

Your VPS M Storage () is equipped with a 400 Mbit/s port by default.

During the last 10 days your VPS M Storage () had been consuming an average outgoing bandwidth of 116 Mbit/s. As mentioned in the regulations on our website, we are forced to throttle the port speed of your instance if the outgoing bandwidth exceeds the bandwidth package for 10 days in a row. To ensure the commitment of ours, to guarantee a fair share of the available bandwidth between all users, we just switched the port of your server to 100 Mbit/s.

Will they eventually remove the restriction? When other providers go up to 10Gbit/s they throttle, nice Contabo.

I checked on 3 VPSs in Dusseldorf (VPS S, and two VPS M) and I reached the maximum port speeds (200 400 Mbps) on HTTP, over HTTPS the high steal reduced the speed on the VPS S to 11--12 MB/s. So I suggest to try without HTTPS.

I was unhappy with Contabo so I switched to netcup and replaced the low-end Contabo VPS with a low-end Kimsufi one. The KS is much better, however it is still the low-end segment of the dedicated market as Contabo is the low-end of VPS market.

Typical response from a Contabo hater ...

For some Contabo, or any comparable provider, just can't do it right. If Contabo does have some monitoring and limits in place they are criticized by some. If Contabo does not they are criticized by others who don't get their fair share of resources.

The way I see it 400 Mb/s for up to max. 10 days clearly indicates that they do support reasonably high use in emergency situations ("Help, I need to get my backup and fast"); if more than a week isn't enough time to download your backup your problem certainly isn't Contabo (wink wink nudge nudge).
For normal "my large storage" use OTOH 100 Mb/s is a quite common bandwidth albeit somewhat on the lower end.

Contabo VMs aren't the top VMs - but they are among the best in terms of bang per buck. That is their market. If you want seriously fast storage and connectivity, no problem, there are providers for that too, but at a quite different price.

I would recommend zap-hosting.com. You can get same specs at a similar price with much better connection (combahton) by just using the 50% off coupon code popup on their site. I know there are some bad reviews about them, but it has been all good experience for me.

Understatement of the year so far. They don't tend to oversell, it's their business model.

If you like Combahton network, you can hit up @HostSlick, they got Combahton connectivity but in the Netherlands which is sweet - no dmca bullshit etc.
