I am new to Racknerd and somewhat to LEBs too, so I have some newb questions. I come from experience with shared hosting, but it's time to have root!

I manage a shared host for serving a website or three. Not much traffic, but it's higher cost than even a 2.5GB KVM VPS with Racknerd. Separately, I want to begin self-hosting a variety of apps, such as Mattermost and Focalboard -- this is mostly for internal use of my business, not for clients.

    1. Would it be a good idea to switch the shared hosting to the VPS and consolidate it all in one place? The only reason for this would be to save money. Everything else is working fine.

    2. What is the right spec'd VPS for a good Mattermost experience? If I want some headroom to add Nextcloud in the future, what would be the right what would be the minimum recommended?

    3. My client is East Coast USA and I'm on the West Coast. Should I locate the VPS in US Central?

Thanks for any suggestions and for tolerating some broad questions about Racknerd before I commit and buy the deal.

If you can't manage and secure the server the move would be terrible choice, also you will be required to atleast have some basic linux terminology before you can even setup your VPS. as for your second question i don't use mattermost but if you are thinking going public with lot of users on mattermost a minimum 4GB RAM server is required. Nextcloud works fine even with 1GB RAM but if you increase the users so does the resources need to be upgraded.

As for third question, get any location you want just make sure it falls under 60ms latency if it's on same continent or region. Good luck with your adventure!

Thanks for the help. I took the plunge. Order number: 8097904662 in case @dustinc is checking. Decided on a San Jose datacenter with 31.843 ping.

I always missed the shared reseller. 🤣

You've got it! ;) You were the first one to start the Stats pages, so I feel I have to thank you for that (because Dustin did not give anything special for us 3 yet) and pass my reseller prize to you ;) I don't have any interest in the service anyways ;) The only thing that makes this interesting for me is 140GB of space :)

    pm'ed you my email address.
thank you so much for the generosity.
    this will help me greatly.

it still boggles my mind that anyone still runs windows for a server

Windows Server is great choice for home based servers as one can easily spawn linux containers using hypervisor!

except when it gets pwned

Well it's true windows = not enough resources! no one handle that, no one!

In alternate universe, this place is called HighEndTalk where people diss Linux and windows is the king.

    umm is windows free there?

Yep, windows is FOSS and open as an open window. Linux is closed source there and run by the evil penguin syndicate. Some distros make you sign a contract before installing that demands sacrificing your first born to the evil kernel overlord.

Penguin Linux :joy: version 11 require x69 processors and 8TB of RAM with SeLinux 8 hardware chip.

Just to run chrome. Truly evil it is

Servers physically in India would suck because then they have to comply with all the surveillance policies of government. Outside India but somewhere close, like Singapore would be better.
