it still boggles my mind that anyone still runs windows for a server

Windows Server is great choice for home based servers as one can easily spawn linux containers using hypervisor!

except when it gets pwned

Well it's true windows = not enough resources! no one handle that, no one!

    Windows = joke OS

And a thousand other reasons especially for enterprise use cases.

    Anything Microsoft is a joke

Yes sure. A joke that is worth trillions.

Well microsoft is a giant corporation because of enterprises!

Couldn’t agree more. Linux is cool and all until you know how much enterprises are dependent on Windows and MS Tech. That too without even considering the Azure side of things.

Yep, windows is FOSS and open as an open window. Linux is closed source there and run by the evil penguin syndicate. Some distros make you sign a contract before installing that demands sacrificing your first born to the evil kernel overlord.

just saw your signature! Good to have an exact match domain!

  • I am new to Racknerd and somewhat to LEBs too, so I have some newb questions. I come from experience with shared hosting, but it's time to have root!

I manage a shared host for serving a website or three. Not much traffic, but it's higher cost than even a 2.5GB KVM VPS with Racknerd. Separately, I want to begin self-hosting a variety of apps, such as Mattermost and Focalboard -- this is mostly for internal use of my business, not for clients.

    1. Would it be a good idea to switch the shared hosting to the VPS and consolidate it all in one place? The only reason for this would be to save money. Everything else is working fine.

    2. What is the right spec'd VPS for a good Mattermost experience? If I want some headroom to add Nextcloud in the future, what would be the right what would be the minimum recommended?

    3. My client is East Coast USA and I'm on the West Coast. Should I locate the VPS in US Central?

Thanks for any suggestions and for tolerating some broad questions about Racknerd before I commit and buy the deal.

lol it sure is, i have it since like 2016(remember the internet.bs .cx sale?) but idle i can't seem to have any idea about working on that. Even the bludit instance setup around june last year prior that it was my grav playground and after that it only had a webpage with an upscaled emoji exactly this one

If you can't manage and secure the server the move would be terrible choice, also you will be required to atleast have some basic linux terminology before you can even setup your VPS. as for your second question i don't use mattermost but if you are thinking going public with lot of users on mattermost a minimum 4GB RAM server is required. Nextcloud works fine even with 1GB RAM but if you increase the users so does the resources need to be upgraded.

As for third question, get any location you want just make sure it falls under 60ms latency if it's on same continent or region. Good luck with your adventure!

Sir is a little going overboard, just call me trk, tbh i was getting .net but with extra i added at front, it was just at that time i saw internetbs holding that sale and guess what, the domain was available and for $20 i got that registered for 4 years.
