It is true that on full auto the AK47 will have a tendency to walk up more that the AR15/M16 because of the larger shell size 7.62mm verse 5.56mm. I do not think that this is the main consideration in choosing one over the other here. Availability of the AK47 is much greater and also when trying to punch thru something the 7.62 is a better round for this. The 5.56, although it will fly further more accurately, is deflected easier in urban use. Especially when most building are made of concrete. Besides the AK sounds a lot cooler, which for some is an important factor. Mexico has a high macho factor involved in some decisions like gun and vehicle choices, among others.
