  I define a “smart” device as some kind of appliance I can easily control remotely on my phone (switches, lights) but I’m pretty sure that’s not the correct definition haha

  You do lose the ability to control it while not connected to the same network unless you expose it publicly which can cause issues with security (just like IoT devices!), but it’s definitely safer overall.
