Ah, I see. I have a raspberry pi that I use as a mini-NAS and for home automation stuff. It gets the job done, but I know that availability has been very limited for over a year.
I wonder how many IPs google owns… must be like a /8 block or something giant like that!
i want more performance aswell...
Never mind, Google doesn’t own a /8 block but Apple, Ford (the car company, for whatever reason), IBM, General Electric and a few more companies all own one. Imagine having access to 16 million IPv4 addresses!
I have not seen many renting/leasing at that price for a /24. But if you already have owned them for a long time and you are just looking for justification to keep the large blocks you already have, and expect them to go even higher in price, than this makes sense.
and i'd jst like a handfull
Ah, in that case you could buy an old computer off of a local marketplace like Craigslist and upgrade storage and other stuff for pretty cheap!
ofc, but a pc that eats 50W in idle, no matter the power, it's useless for me
thats 15€ every month... yeah nope
I see. Most modern cpus take up around 20W idle, and combined with other components can get up to 30-40W of idle power. A ryzen 5 3600, for example, combined with other system components takes up 60W idle, so the only truly power efficient home server would be something ARM-based like a pi.
nope

@MooCowGalaxy
and gn, defiently gonna miss smth epic
If I am correct nobody actually "owns" IPv4 accept the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. The yearly and transfer fees can, and do change as time goes on, and in the future they can change to pretty much whatever they want.
I just saw that spreadsheet after I sent the comment, and it does look like intel chips have much better idle power efficiency than AMD. In that case, it should be possible to achieve a low idle wattage (maybe in the range of 15-20W with storage, ram, and mobo/psu inefficiencies). If you ever do build a low power home server, please share because I’m curious as to what it would look like!
Yeah, but by owning I mean like being able to control each IP. I see what you mean though
It’s been quiet here, we’re 7 pages away from 500! Is anyone here?

I was wondering how well we do compared to RN's last year BF thread (which is still active) and here's what I got:
Definitely much more active, I wonder how the final results at the end of the giveaway will compare to last year’s.
if you remind me, I'll rerun the script when than happens
