SSD Caching on PC
Hello.
I see so many providers have ssd-cached plans. I want to ask them what technology are you using for ssd caching?
I have 500GB SATA and a 64GB SSD on my personal computer. I want to try ssd caching. I have Ubuntu 13.10 with kernel 3.11 installed. So I think I have built in dm-cache.
What to use for ssd caching? If you can refer me a tutorial it will be good.

It wont help. In a multi-environment situation where some people red some write, etc, the ssd caching saves a lot of read ops allowing the raid to catch up with writing and sync the cache. Unless you are using a busy database with lots of iops of both reading and writing when reading is much more frequent and the last data input it needed most, no noticeable speeding will be noted.
You can put the OS and swap there and keep the sata only for multimedia/general storage, the more IOPS you offload to the ssd the better the sata disk will cope. However, it will never compare to a virtualization server's operation.
I just want to try it anyway.
IIRC Seagate have some 2.5" drive with internal ssd like caching.
you mean like the hybrid drives?
Wonder if anyone has a DD results for those, I know that online.net offers it on their u2250 servers..

We use LSI MegaRAID CacheCADE on our SSD-Cached storage, which appears to bring the wa% and disk-related loads on our nodes down considerably both when idling and when full (90%+us/sy) loads.
However, the licensing for this is expensive compared to some other solutions.

They also now have some desktop SSHDs. They are normal sized 1TB or 2TB drives with something like an 8GB SSD inside. They cost a tiny bit more than usual HDDs.

The advantage of that is that the controller does the job inside, so no more need for modules in kernel and extra load.
