Well I am sure the cost has changed greatly from when I did it in the 1980's. You can check out the local small airports where small planes fly out off in your area. If things have not changed too much there should be an instructor with a "Learn how to Fly" sign out at almost all of these small airports.
If you want a quick rundown of the current requirements, you can check out this online flight school web page I would say that you should shop around as prices for the training, even when I did it, can vary greatly. I would suggest learning to fly in a Cessna 150, then get checked out in a Cessna 172.
If things have not changed too much you can normally find a Cessna 172 to rent almost any where, so you can fly when/where you want to. Both of these aircraft are high wing models which are easier to fly when learning. After you get a little experience get checked out on an Piper Archer, or a Mooney M20E these are low wing planes that I really liked to fly. Of course things may have changed greatly since that was a long time ago.
