Proxmox Backup Server - Only HDDs?
Was just wondering if anyone is running Proxmox Backup Server with no SSD's and just on HDD's?
I know Proxmox recommends running it on SSDs or at least with a special device to host the metadata on.
Can anyone share their experience? Is it usable? Is it too slow?

No, its not too slow. Majority of people are backuping on HDDs.
You are pasting recommended specs - its more like 'how to build best machine possible'.
You also have redundant multiGbit listed there and you dont need that either, but ofc SSDs are recommended if youre going to use 10Gbit NIC right?
You also dont need 1GB of RAM per TB. These specs are only a guide what is the best combo to get everything out of proxmox.
Thanks @AXYZE yeah I know they're the recommended specs, but I was reading through some forum/reddit posts and there's a number of threads complaining about how long it takes for garbage collection and data verifications to complete when running on just HDD's - 6 and 8TB which is the amount of data I'll probably have too.
So I'm trying to figure out how slow it'll actually be
I'm using PBS on KS1 in docker
.
Working as expected .
Running on 4x HDD RAID-5
It's plenty fast for our needs. Backups are secudeled at different times so there will be no I/O issue.
It's a bit slow only when we transfer over 100 GB+ KVM VPS Backups.
@Shakib thanks!
Can I ask roughly how long you've been running that setup and how many VM's/data you're backing up?
Did you go RAID-5 or RAIDZ1?
Using PBS with HDDs in a hardware raid 1. It feels sufficiently fast to backup small VMs, with no bottlenecks so far - will see how well it scales in the future.
Approx. 1 Year, 300 to 400 and RAID-5 as far as I remember.
I'm using PBS on KS1 without any issues
We are running a RAID 10 of 6x datacenter 18 TB CMR drives and are experiencing way to slow backup and garbage collection times.
At the moment we consider upgrading to 8 drives or switching to ZFS with a special device for metadata IO.
We are backing up 1050 VMs eating up 26TB of data at the moment
Necro?
@Arkas
spindle speeds are for nerds.
Mix em all. ULTRA Scsi? regular SCSI? SAS? SATA? iSCSI? SWAP on SAN?
Interoperability is key. Also these are all government aligned, so its all likely just fake.
