Are SolusVM templates from Template Distribution Network reliable and trustworthy?

Installed "Ryzen Compatible" Ubuntu 20 template on my VPS and I see it defaults to downloading Ubunutu updates from http://ru.archive.ubuntu.com.

Should the Ubuntu archives be http? Not https?

That's not a big problem as it's easy to change but also see some errors when the OS installs/starts up, as well as other issues with the Virtualmin/Webmin control panel. These errors never occurred for me in the past when I used the regular Ubunutu ISO to install the OS, and they don't occur on any of my other ISO installed VPSs with the identical setup.

  • Doesn't matter, Debian based distros use apt which includes own signatures based on GPG.
    Can be either ftp/http/https.
What kind of errors? Try changing the mirror and use dpkg to troubleshoot what causes it.
Generally you should avoid "provider templates" and mount your own ISO when possible, this
way you can make sure you don't get "surprises" in your template.

  • Error was something to do with the swap file I think:

    dev-disk-by\x2duuid-164012b9\x2d47bd\x2d4a1a\x2d81e4\x2dxxx0d2efbab42.device/start failed with result 'timeout'.

Created a swap file manually later on.

I see other errors in the syslog but probably not relevant.

The errors with Webmin/Virtualmin are whenever I import a backup or do some other tasks where Webmin needs to restart it always crashes and must be manually restarted from the command line. Now this may have nothing to do with the template used but when I saw the Ubuntu updates all came from Russian archives started me wondering about trustworthiness of the templates in general. It's the first time I've had this issue on any VPS.

Unfortunately at this time the host gives no option to mount an ISO or boot from CD or use any other install method- only install from template, and all the templates offered are from Template Distribution Network

That's never really a problem with KVM. Never limit yourself to provider's choices

  • Thanks. I looked over those instructions and am pretty sure something will go wrong if I try that, thanks in part to my limited Linux knowledge. But will probably give it a shot anyway.

One possible problem is that my budget black friday VPS only has 850MB RAM, not sure I can boot in RAM mode as site indicates

Do you know of any other tutorials for this process geared more toward newbies, and/or specifically for Ubuntu 20 server minimal install?

  • You don't need lots of RAM for this to work, you only bootstrap the ISO on your drive, then
reboot in live install mode like you would from a traditional CD back in the days.
