Recommendations for FREE email hosting for custom domain

I've googled around for free hosting for custom domains, and I've seen that some of the lists are inaccurate, misleading and/or out of date.
What is the current best option for free email hosting for custom domains?
This is for something largely unimportant. Hell, I am considering using mailinator (free) for it if that gives you an idea. (No customers will send information to this domain. No important email will be sent to the domain.)
What are the current options? What is the best option?

Zoho.
I think you should spend some money and get a package on the number of mails.
Monthly / annual plans will be expensive.
Check these pay-as-you-use providers:
https://aws.amazon.com/ses/pricing/
https://www.zoho.com/zeptomail/pricing.html
You can also use zoho mail free plan. But this do not have mail forwarding feature.

Free = you are the product. How much do you value your emails?
infomaniak.com offers free email if you keep your domain with them.

Nice! Thank You!
New page for me and lots of useful information.
Web only, IIRC_ no more imap etc.
:-) Do you really expect an answer to that question in LE* forums? Cheers,
OP- look up Improvmx
For this specific usecase, I value them zero. Hence looking for a free option.
I understand that there are downsides and that there are better options if you do value your emails.
Are you monetizing your own emails?
I wrote about one alternative https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/180505/how-to-host-email-for-custom-domains-for-free-or-almost-free#latest
but may be some risks, see thread
