Hetzner now charging for cloud server IPv4 separated
Hello all,
Today I was ordering a cloud server from Hetzner and I noticed that there is fixed fees of €0.50 for the IPv4 for every cloud server and you can remove the IPv4 and get the cloud server for lower price,
Thankfully the IPv4 is optional and you can order VPS with only IPv6 or without any IP,
What do you think about this change ?
best

Are they actually charging extra for it, or are they just separating the charges?
Yes this is correct there is a simple trick you can use IPv6 with CDN like Cloudflare and your websites will still work with IPv4 connections
It's not that they are adding charges, they are providing the option to not add an IPv4. So if you choose to add IPv4, the price is the same as before, but if you opt out, it's cheaper than before. And a lot easier to manage firewalls.
Yes I know, and you can add IPv4 separated and remove the server and then link it to another server
I think that was the way forward when hetzner increased the IP prices and made it optional in their dedicated servers line.
Can we still connect to v4 network for example if we do wget url will it download?
Yes, if you use public DNS64 services, there are many, example:
https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/dns64
https://developers.cloudflare.com/1.1.1.1/infrastructure/ipv6-networks/
But from my experience, the public DNS64 services are all unstable for me.
It's pretty easy to set up your own DNS64, there are many manuals on the internet.
Google and CF dns unstable??? It's unbelievable?
What ip address the v4 remote host will see when we do wget url?
You can use CF Warp to get ipv4 connectivity for free.
Typical VPN will work too if it supports IPv6.
Sounds nice if you want to have IPv6 only @yoursunny
@Jorbox It's good to see you, friend
Well have you been using their DNS64? They had been unreliable for me in weeks before I had to set up my own DNS64
Yes I will do that too but with Cloudflare support xD
Thanks bro its nice to see you too
Ha, Hetzner will trigger the global IPv6 migration by slowly adding fees.
Hahaha correct
I’m already for a panel support IPv6 natively
The DNS64 service by Google and Cloudflare translates A records (for IPv4 only domain names) into IPv6 address (AAAA) records using the standard 64:ff9b::/96 prefix.
You also need a NAT64 router which translates IPv6 traffic with destinations within the 64:ff9b::/96 prefix to IPv4 and back. It's an IPv4 address used by this router the remote IPv4 host will see.
