Virmach, service down, not on known issues list, and no reply from support for more than 3 weeks.

So... I really do not like posting this since in general i am very satisfied with how things have been working, and also this is about dirt cheap "special" VPS, but at this point I have more or less given up, did whatever I needed/wanted using another provider/VM and just wanted to warn others that this is happening, because IMO it is not a great sign.

What happened? Basically they screwed up VM migration LONG time ago completely breaking it and i could not be bothered to do something about it for a while. At some point about 3 weeks ago i remembered i still have this machine and thought i could use it for a project. I created a ticket describing the issue and clearly (at least i hope so, being non-native english speaker) stating all i need is for VM to be re-provisioned. Got automated reply that it has been assigned somewhere and that's it.

Here is a screenshot with all relevant info:

Again, i understand that this is extremely cheap service, i did not need it "right now", i am not "loosing millions" or anything but it is really sad how things like this can ruin any trust and good will towards provider...

I apologize in advance for not reading your LET support ticket above, but I took a quick look for you. We've been getting a lot of tickets recently with many of them being false reports of outages and/or services being offline so it's been difficult to pick off every one. Our Tokyo launch far exceeded any projections. Sales numbers were close to Black Friday, for reference. We try to prioritize though created in the priority department and even those are difficult to get through at this time unless they have immaculate titles so we know exactly what's going on.

Even with that said, I will admit that support has been sub-par recently. There's no excuse for some of it and I'll also admit we have definitely missed tickets we shouldn't have missed.

With that said, performing these commands this closely to eachother will not reap great results:

    02/04/2022 05:28 AM Boot Complete
02/04/2022 05:28 AM Hard Power Off Complete
02/04/2022 05:28 AM Change VNC Password Complete
    02/04/2022 05:24 AM Boot Complete
02/04/2022 05:19 AM Reinstall OS Complete

I would consider this an example of the type of tickets weighing us down right now. Perhaps I'm wrong, I haven't spent a lot of time as I usually would auditing everything.

The fix for this would normally be to not spam the system with a boot command after a re-install or other buttons within 5-10 minutes of another command, especially a re-install.

That means click re-install, and wait.

Of course, there could be a number of other things wrong, but this is the most likely solution. If it works for you, please close your ticket.

By the way we do appreciate you being a customer for such a long time.

It is not. More like a mini review of my experience with your support.

@VirMach said: With that said, performing these commands this closely to eachother will not reap great results:

Yep. Me randomly mashing buttons in frustration instead of posting on LET...
Seriously though i knew the thing was dead as nails since it was broken by migration back in 2020 (#512347). Any real troubleshooting i tried was back then.

@VirMach said: I would consider this an example of the type of tickets weighing us down right now.

That's just mean. Seriously. First the VM is broken by your tech staff actions, then nobody bothers to simply reprovision it in nearly a months, and then i am apparently weighting you down by such ticket...

FWIW my Virmach VPS (NL) is working fine.

    @VirMach

Not trying to push you, really not (I've waited very patiently without any complaint), but when will my NL VPS be put on a Zen (Epyc or Ryzen) node? I vaguely remember that you promised to put all VPS purchased back then in that promo onto Zen sooner or later ...

  • VoidVoid Member

In my experience, reinstalling OS takes forever in VirMach. Learnt it the hard way. But then again, what right do I have to complain about an $8 VPS.

That's understandable and it would be completely fine if it took a long time to "reinstall" (though some indication that it is still happening would be helpful), but the thing in this case is - something fails when VM is started. Likely some issue in config or something. Even if os is dead or vm "disk" is completely empty it should at least start and show something over vnc. But in this case it does not happen.

They said this in July 2021 about ryzen migrations.

The VM was running OpenBSD before it was broken, given the amount of RAM i was intending to either reinstall that or use Alpine linux, because both can realistically run with those specs, unlike more mainstream linux distributions.

However, as i said, VM never even powered on.

Also, as a sidenote, i installed Alpine linux on another VM without issues around the same time i created that ticket, so this really are not my actions or linux distribution which are wrong...

Why fight and go to war defending the elites who wouldn't fight themselves. What are you defending when you own nothing, let them seize the elites property.

You've become too brainwashed to see the truth. It's the same kind of people who believe it actually matters who you vote for, like you can actually make a difference. totally ignoring the fact that they're all puppets of the elite trying to give you the illusion of choice

The machine in question has much more modest specs with 128MB ram, 10GB HDD and some old intel CPU for $6/y. It is fairly old special, but for my needs it was/is completely fine. Basically dedicated ipv4 is already a steal for this price, as long as the thing actually works...

As far as "sub-par" goes, yeah... i've used the services for quite a few years and have been quite satisfied with how stuff worked, apart from bad experience with storage VM which was useless because of IO limits (creating/verifying backup triggered auto shutdown).

But as it is now i am going to move on and migrate everything out. I've seen this before "a few times" - "exciting new hardware", "preorders", collateral damage, complete lack of care/support for those who was unlucky enough to encounter issues and whole "do not bother us with your useless questions" attitude.

Not going to end well. Many will jump on "exciting offers", idle them for a year or two and never renew, while people who were intending to actually use stuff long-term would be scared away by instability/lack of care.

The last command I see on here is "Boot" after you interrupted the installation of the OS and changed VNC settings.

You'd need to "re-install" once and let it complete for it to power on.

You can do this on your end. If by account you mean the user, you'd just have to invite/add a new user to add a new user that can log in and access your account and then create a ticket to delete the other user.

I still need to know which OS you're trying to install if it's running into issues, a specific name for the template or ISO. As I do not see any re-installation request, I am assuming this hasn't yet been tried?

I would expect it to, most probably, power on and be unable to boot since "hdd" would be incomplete/corrupted. Unless whatever storage is used remains locked that is.

But ok, if you insist i've hit reinstall a couple of times with different templates leaving the thing be for unreasonable amount of time. It does not work, as expected. Whatever the issue is it is not in contents of VM storage, it is something host-level and i cannot do anything about it, i am just wasting my time here.

If you want template example - here you go: "Linux Ubuntu 16.04 Server X86 64 Minimal Latest"

As for ISOs... it is quite hard to try using one when VM does not power on. So whatever i wanted to install is irrelevant at this point because it has been impossible to try.
