Opinion on Hetzner ax41 dedicated

How good is Hetzner ax41? Looks like they often have zero setup fees. It's too good to be true? Or they are reliable? Plus they have 100gb free backup on this plan. I need it for WordPress sites. Are they giving dedicated resources, entire cpu and ram?

Nope, they don't have 0 set-up fee often, maximum twice a year. That being said, you will have to wait until Black Friday if you missed current one.

FYI, all the resources are dedicated.

It's still available with zero fees. That's why i was asking if they are any good and if those resources cpu and ram are dedicated.

They are one of the top providers, all resources are dedicated if that's what you're asking.

    • Great price/performance
    • Good support
    • expensive IPs
    • Bad ddos protection
  • I have been a client since early 2018. Carry two dedicated servers the entire time (and misc. cloud servers when initially available). I started with EX42s and moved to AX42s. All resources are bare metal, dedicated machines, no virtualization.

Support has always been very responsive, especially in issues that required someone to pull a crash cart for a reboot. In addition, when I have asked for upgrades, they've been added nearly the same day, if not within 6 hours.

The unmetered connection cannot be beat, which is the main draw. Hetzner's rescue system is pretty good; even the half-baked vKVM has come in handy a few times (please PM me if you find a way to pass English characters to it; I can't figure out every alt mapping from ENG to DE keyboard).

Not the best IP reputation and some lists even flat our blacklist Hetzner entirely, so I wouldn't try running mail on it (unless you can clean it off the existing ones).

Overall, solid 9/10. The price to performance to support ratio is high, keeps me happy, and keeps me returning.

  • I have been using an AX41 NVMe for more than 1,5 years now.

    Pro's:

    • Very good price/quality (got 2 brand new NVMe's with 0% wearout)
    • Speed/bandwith is amazing with 1G speeds and unlimited traffic
    • Easily configurable (I have added 2x 4TB HDD disks)
    • Very easy to buy plesk/cpanel licenses which you can instantly link to your IPs
    • Multiple locations (Finland is eaven cheaper)
    • Great uptime (100% network uptime for 2021)
    • Great support
    • Free 100GB storage box with AX41's

    Cons:

    • No KVM. You need to request a kvm by ticket.
    • I got an IP subnet when it used to be free. Very costly now.
    • Bad IP reputation

I'll use it for small websites so I'll need some emails.

I just got one, everything went fine so far, i installed cpanel on my own with my own license.

I hope the ip isn't blocked by yahoo, gmail, Microsoft, like they usually do.

Wow, I have never heard about any of these other than Hetzner freezing the server due to some complaint. Could you please elaborate a bit more?

  • Wow, I have never heard about any of these other than Hetzner freezing the server due to some complaint. Could you please elaborate a bit more?

I run a kubernetes cluster on the server which creates private subnets with 10.x addresses. It so happens that the node periodically sends a broadcast packet to this private 10.x subnet for service discovery and Hetzner demanded why my server is sending these packets (which frankly is none of their business, but this shows that they monitor packets coming out of your server). Eventually my server was frozen because they didn't like this behavior. That was an auction server, and I thought, "OK, maybe what I was doing wasn't worth the cost since I was getting the server on the cheap." I gave them a second chance with the AX line and my server got frozen and account disabled again, this time without even an email. Hetzner will not get another cent from me. They probably make most of their money from resellers, colocating, and server hoarders that buy expensive servers to run nextcloud or a blog site. I can't imagine anyone using Hetzner for any serious business with their practices.

@mosquitoguy My issue is that i can not host .DE domains anywhere, except OVH as far as i know and i don't like OVH. I contacted hetzenr support and seems like they don't give a 2 cents about it, the only answer was we take care of the hardware. Even though i sent them email before i signed up asking them if i can host .DE domains they said YES.

What do you mean "host .DE domains"? Register the domain anywhere and use whatever nameserver (e.g. Amazon Route53, cloudflare, etc). Add entry to nameserver for your server. The server can be anywhere and has no relation to the domain that you registered. All three (domain registration, nameserver, server) can be with different providers and need not be the same.

Using my own custom nameservers on cpanel.

I presume you use cpanel as the registrar and nameserver. You can keep using that and just get a server from anywhere you want and update your nameserver entry for the new server.

    Doesn't work with ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com

WordPress sites, im moving from OVH. I use custom nameservers like i mentioned above. But OVH does have option to use one of their nameservers as mine so it's redundant IP configuration because .DE domains are very complicated and they need that type of setup.

.DE domains are very very very complicated and they have to pass through Denic nast tool: https://www.denic.de/en/service/tools/nast/

They need IP redundancy with 2 IPs on 2 servers otherwise you can't use any nameserver, they won't work and the domain registrar won't accept them at all.

The domains are with namecheap, that doesn't matter where they are registered the registrar has nothing to do, what matters is the hosting server and the network. Example, liquidweb doesn't support these domains at all no matter what you do, the same with Linode.

OVH is the only one that i know does have option in their dashboard to add my ns1.mydomain.com and use their redundant IP config. Basically it's like a mask, using OVH nameserver covered with my own custom nameservers. I know this because i have server with them, but we know how OVH support is 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢😀😀

Now, Hetzher doesn't have this option to provide their own redundant nameserver for this reason unless i can use one of their secondary DNS https://docs.hetzner.com/dns-console/dns/general/authoritative-name-servers/ which I'm hoping this will help. (I am trying this now).

There are limited providers that can support .DE domains. Is just European/German law that requires redundant DNS, basically loading from 2 servers.

And i do have a lot of WP sites, 50+ so reseller that gives me inode and resources limit won't work.

I see, the name server setup sounds like a pain in the ass. Most reseller plans on here at least at per-account resource limits, so that wouldn’t really be a problem.

I am using their services only for 5 days and if this happens already, who knows what else i should expect when i have it loaded with clients websites. Better if i move on somewhere else.

Usually the responses I get only take a couple of minutes if it's regarding a product or service, though I've noticed slightly higher response times recently. I would recommend asking for a KVM if your server is down, they have a department for it. Usually it takes 10-20 minutes for them to plug in a KVM, which will give you access to a live view of your server and then you can reboot it or boot into rescue.

I don't think you'll find another provider that is as cheap as Hetzner, though. Even OVH has pretty bad support if you're not a large customer.

My Hetzner dedicated servers are reliable, I have some with 200-300+ days of uptime.

There might be some sort of hardware issue with your server or some other issue. I would request a KVM and see what your server is currently doing.

But shutting down just on a regular work, from the same IP ????

My Hetzner dedicated servers are reliable, I have some with 200-300+ days of uptime.

There might be some sort of hardware issue with your server or some other issue. I would request a KVM and see what your server is currently doing.

    I'll try and see..

@lucienfc said: Nope, they don't have 0 set-up fee often, maximum twice a year. That being said, you will have to wait until Black Friday if you missed current one.

They do it every summer too. 3-4 times per year, not 2.

Are they giving dedicated resources, entire cpu and ram?

FYI, all the resources are dedicated.

This thing is literally called dedicated server, so I guess that answers your question?

My experience running windows on AMD hardware has always been trash, in general, but also for servers in particular. It is probably just me tho, but thought I would mention it. There might be a slightly higher possibility of "bad luck" with AMD.
