Question about these high ping stats

deer76deer76 Member

I have a nice Hosthatch storage box that I started using recently, however the ping stats puzzle me:

PING mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=1 ttl=49 time=159 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=2 ttl=49 time=159 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=3 ttl=49 time=159 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=4 ttl=49 time=160 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=5 ttl=49 time=159 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=6 ttl=49 time=159 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=7 ttl=49 time=159 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=8 ttl=49 time=159 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=9 ttl=49 time=159 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=10 ttl=49 time=162 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=11 ttl=49 time=159 ms
64 bytes from mybox.example.com (x.y.z.w): icmp_seq=12 ttl=49 time=159 ms
^C
--- mybox.example.com ping statistics ---
12 packets transmitted, 12 received, 0% packet loss, time 11012ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 159.047/159.502/162.091/0.801 ms

Even from other locations it seems to be around 137ms, and not much changes on IPv6. The funny thing is that egress traffic is extremely fast instead! So the slowdown is somehow only on the incoming traffic for my box.

Any idea why it behaves like this? e.g. is this due to some firewall on their side or some other weird SDN configuration?

Thanks

Try ping it from Australia, then tell me again, its 137ms or 159ms.

  • Try https://ping.pe to get more lantecy stats. And generally speaking, latency won't be the bottleneck of bandwidth.

  • I don't understand what puzzles you. I guess you're expecting lower ping times? Please post a traceroute too.
