VMware / VirtualBox very slow NAT? Any idea why?

Testing was done on Cyberlynk's Mac Mini 2012 server, on macOS Catalina.
On paper, it has 1Gbps port.

But when I do the same test on a VMware fusion running Ubuntu ... wtf was this?
It's so slow even the page barely load!

Yeaaaaah I gave up.

Even pinging was so bad.
(base) root@rinaldo-server1:~# ping 1.1.1.1 PING 1.1.1.1 (1.1.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=170 ms 64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 time=499 ms 64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=128 time=715 ms 64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=4 ttl=128 time=1876 ms 64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=5 ttl=128 time=2705 ms 64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=6 ttl=128 time=2864 ms 64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=7 ttl=128 time=2747 ms 64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=8 ttl=128 time=2446 ms 64 bytes from 1.1.1.1: icmp_seq=9 ttl=128 time=2225 ms ^C --- 1.1.1.1 ping statistics --- 11 packets transmitted, 9 received, 18.1818% packet loss, time 10048ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 170.337/1805.191/2863.704/998.751 ms, pipe 3

To add more info : this also happens under VirtualBox and VMware Player, when the host is Windows.
But when the same VM was booted into QEMU on Ubuntu, it wasn't so bad.

What happened?

  • for some reason, I added another network adapter, put it as ipv6 only, and the ping went better.

I guess the problem is all in the NAT?

  • you can try another option, such as Bridge protocol, and test again.

  • that was literally what I said on the post above. but I only have one ipv4 unfortunately.
