    And this is why we probably can't have a nice whatsapp api to send messages to ourselves.

    It is unfortunate how closed Whatsapp API is, and as risharde notes - it is vermin like the above that's partially responsible, though I'm sure Whatsapp are happy to extract a minimal volume fee too.

    For those that do want to integrate Whatsapp there are services like Twilio that have a quasi sponsored API. It would be above the spammers price point so the suggestion isn't targeted at them.
