I'm using their VPSes for mostly idling, if I'm being honest. I have a lot of test projects here and there, and at least one production website on their web hosting services.

Not gonna lie, I do have a fleet idling right now, but I have plans to use them this year.

Hopefully I follow through with them asap. If not, or until then, I have been known to let friends use them as long as they agree to not voilate any TOS or anything to get me in trouble or disrupt the network.

You're awesome @BlazinDimes -- giving back, did I expect less from you? Keep doing great things πŸ‘Š

im currently making a "NAS-ish" from parts I got from friends (some broken), some are tight(450W psu) some are good (gtx 780)

so far had to pay 40€ for paste + case, gotta pay 59$ for unraid license and in upcomming years like a lot for hopefully 5x4tb HDD to put in it to use the dam thing...

someone send me like 6x 12TB lol could keep all my RAW footage πŸ‘€

for what I don't need huge processing power (unless we talk locally to render/edit videos)

I got on a tangent in my last post lol

I just picked up a Core 2 Duo desktop with GeForce 8500 for free, just needs some DDR2 RAM, still figuring out what to do with it. I love a budget NAS, or maybe a KODI (XBMC) box, but I've got Raspberry Pi's for those now so again, power issues dangit.

I do have a buddy who has electric included who said I could host a few servers there, so maybe it'll end up there. I miss when I didn't have to pay for electric.

6x12TB would be amazing. I'm a data hoarder and always lacking in storage.

Free electricity is a huge bonus :)

I have no idea. I won two vps, but I don’t know what to do.
Who can share some interesting source code?

Awesome wins! I'm confident you'll be happy with the level of service we provide. Keep us updated with how you've put them to use :)

    water damage is pain

did you manage to figure out what is even broken?

Didn't remember. I thought it was keyboard. Blown some air, dried it. It booted but stopped again. That lapotp's hinge was also broken by that time( common complaint for that dell vostro model). So I got irritated and bought a new laptop instead.

In 2020 I repaired a Dell Latitude E6400 motherboard that had years old energy drink damage and sat, using little more than Ether (starting fluid), a quick rinse in the shower, then some peroxide to rinse. Literally all I had on hand after moving into the new house and a replacement was only $10 so it was supposed to be just a fun failure.

Son-of-a-bitch worked and STILL RUNS TODAY.

I do not recommend this method at ALL.

You are giving me hope to revive my dead lappy.. I should to clean the dust now..

Seriously that method mostly worked due to the era of laptop it was, having an NVIDIA onboard graphics with early BGA solder that failed (think Xbox 360) so don't try what I just said expecting to do anything but cause damage. I would never spray that aerosol ether on anything I cared about.

That being said, there is a good chance your old laptop can be fixed. It just depends on the level of work or investment a person is willing to put into it. I'd be happy to help how I can, but I must stress that you do not spray ether on it unless you know what you're doing as you can cause a beautiful yet very destructive fire lol

EDIT: I need to stop joking about ether. Beautiful or not, it'll kill you, don't play with it.

No no.. I am not talking about dipping my lappy in ehter, or any other liquid lol. 🀣

What I meant is, Til now, I never got any motivation to try repair that again. After reading your success stories, my hands are itching to try again now.

I just feel like I need to disclaimer that story when I tell it because people will copy it and without the proper precautions I could have burned my house down lol

Glad my success stories have motivated you, I take in a lot of abandoned tech and bring it back to life in my free time. Almost nothing I own is new, my laptop is really the only exception and its now 2 years old. Was a treat to myself lol

I think we waste too much and I love seeing "old" tech brought back to see new life as there are people out there that would love to have some of the things people just toss in the trash. An i5 laptop is a low power server in my eyes, considering the broken hinge you mentioned, I did the same with an AMD A6 laptop and its been running headless for so many years. Over 50k hours on the original HGST HDD without a single SMART error even yet. Not fast by today's standards but what its used for it does well at an electric cost lower than a single incandescent light bulb.

Ha ha. I like to repair my things as we... Sucessfully done many, and in the process, I damagaged some.

Last month, my mouse scroll wheel not working, so I opened my steelseries mouse to fix it. Didn't fix the mouse wheel, but damaged the vibration motor connection as well. πŸ˜†

I took me two days of trial and error to fix the vibration motor with some soldering.

i have been fixing electronics for 10+ years, depends how much info/tools/luck you have...

I usually carry bad luck in my back pocket.. πŸ˜‰

More than info/tools/luck, I think you need patience to repair these electronics.. esp when you don't know what you are doing.. 😝

That's what I am thinking of doing now. If I can successfully repair the lappy, I will turn it into a local dev server.
