Man, wow, I feel like I should get you something in return!
I'd offer remote tech services but I feel like you probably know what you're doing. lol. But if there is anything I can offer/help with let me know.
You at least have to have some say in what it becomes with your contribution. You think it would be best used as a retrobox (gaming), NAS, or something else?
I'll hit you up, thanks again man.

LETS-PAY-IT-FORWARD
You know, like that movie? The one I've been quoting for years and need to watch again. lol
LETS-PAY-IT-FORWARD
I like this one
You are giving me hope to revive my dead lappy.. I should to clean the dust now..
Seriously that method mostly worked due to the era of laptop it was, having an NVIDIA onboard graphics with early BGA solder that failed (think Xbox 360) so don't try what I just said expecting to do anything but cause damage. I would never spray that aerosol ether on anything I cared about.
That being said, there is a good chance your old laptop can be fixed. It just depends on the level of work or investment a person is willing to put into it. I'd be happy to help how I can, but I must stress that you do not spray ether on it unless you know what you're doing as you can cause a beautiful yet very destructive fire lol
EDIT: I need to stop joking about ether. Beautiful or not, it'll kill you, don't play with it.
No no.. I am not talking about dipping my lappy in ehter, or any other liquid lol. 🤣
What I meant is, Til now, I never got any motivation to try repair that again. After reading your success stories, my hands are itching to try again now.
i have been fixing electronics for 10+ years, depends how much info/tools/luck you have...
I just feel like I need to disclaimer that story when I tell it because people will copy it and without the proper precautions I could have burned my house down lol
Glad my success stories have motivated you, I take in a lot of abandoned tech and bring it back to life in my free time. Almost nothing I own is new, my laptop is really the only exception and its now 2 years old. Was a treat to myself lol
I think we waste too much and I love seeing "old" tech brought back to see new life as there are people out there that would love to have some of the things people just toss in the trash. An i5 laptop is a low power server in my eyes, considering the broken hinge you mentioned, I did the same with an AMD A6 laptop and its been running headless for so many years. Over 50k hours on the original HGST HDD without a single SMART error even yet. Not fast by today's standards but what its used for it does well at an electric cost lower than a single incandescent light bulb.
This right here is also a big part of it. Which is why I like to try to help walk people through a repair, but in the end it comes down to skill, or desire to learn said skill.
disagreed, there is so much stuff that just cant be fixed because the manufacturer is a total dickhead (like 12V in a CPU on a mac...) not to mind access to schematics...
Apple products are a whole different thing, and one of the few things I don't enthusiastically support. I generally refuse jobs that involve them unless paid well.
Right to repair, it needs to be a thing. Apple is one of the biggest enemies on that front.
I have a massive collection of schematics and datasheets, I should probably go through and index them for public use. Its taken years to collect them and they just sit on an old hard drive.
one of, but there are many like this
it's so bad im considering spending like 100-200€ on a lightbulb big thingy (design most of stuff myself) because LED lights promise millions of hours but last like 1-3 years max
i want CRI 95+ 3k+ Lumen
That is a good one, nice play on words
LETS-PAY-IT-FORWARD
Let me know when you do that, I'd love to hoard those.
For sure, but I have been saving them for years and haven't done it yet. Maybe a good plan for 2022 and a good use for one of my servers.
who is want to donate some racknerd credit for me?
